Westworld series on HBO coming in October

The on-again, off-again Westworld series is back on! HBO announced it will air in October of this year, and debuted a teaser trailer yesterday.

I’m cautiously optimistic - the trailer looks pretty cool, it has a decent writer in Jonathan Nolan, some great actors (Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright), and J.J. Abrams appears to have minimal involvement.

Wow, that trailer looks really cool! I didn’t know what to think of it when the teaser was up a while back, but this looks incredibly interesting - almost like a Truman Show meets Ex Machina vibe. Also HBO needs to develop a new drama to take over the mantle when GoT and the Leftovers are over, and this definitely seems to have potential.

New trailer out. The first episode could be nothing but a loop of the scenes from the trailer with Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris, and I’d be happy.

Based on Person of Interest, Memento, and The Prestige, all by Jonathan Nolan, and the original movie, I’m pretty excited for this.

If JJ Abrams kept his hand out of it, I expect to be pleased.

I’m in. Loved that movie, warts and all. I take it Ed Harris is inheriting a version of the Yul Brynner role. And yeah, the first season could be Harris and Hopkins reminiscing and squaring off, and I’d be just fine with that.

Sigh, though. Had to squeeze in the ObHot(Robot)Lesbian scene. You’d think the old West was half gunslingers and half hot girl on girl action…

If the storyline they’re going for is the one in which the robots are developing consciousness, then it’s a bit like the Channel 4/AMC program Humans.

From the trailer, it seems like Dolores might be more of the main character. I suspect that she’ll be the one trying to find a middle ground between the robot rebels and the controlling human makers.

I suspect that Hopkins and Harris will be less prevalent than they seem in the trailer. They’re pretty big actors and they probably have the heft to not get tied down to a crazy TV film schedule, so they will have negotiated to have a fairly minimal screen time.

I’m sure you’re right, particularly with Hopkins. But Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores) is an excellent actress and I’m sure will have no trouble carrying it if it comes down to her.

Well, it’s HBO, so it’s pretty much a given that there will be plenty of that. But in fairness, this isn’t a show about the old West - it’s about a fantasy land for (primarily) men, so it’s pretty realistic that the “world” would include lots of sex.

I understand a movie about a theme park gone bad, ONE movie, but how much meat can be in that concept for stories to last a TV series?, I suppose we’ll see.
