I’ve read a lot about how it’s overcompressed and somewhat distorted as a result, but I guess my ears aren’t good enough to pick it up. Can you give me an example of where on the album you can hear distortion?
All the usual suspects - The Cardigans: Gran Turismo; Roky Erickson rarities and Whitehouse: Racket. I gotta get out more.
Right this second?
Dead Boys.
Today:
The Lens - A Word In Your Eye
Eloy - Metromania
Symphony X - V
UK - Night After Night
Happy Family - Toscco
The easiest way to hear it is to get yourself a copy of the version that was released for Guitar Hero by whatever means and compare the two.
For a really mindblowing look at how awful the mastering is on the new Metallica album, check out the picture in this blog post. I mean …seriously? No peaks? No valleys? At all?
Actually, I prefer this graphic from an older thread comparing the mixing on Death Magnetic and Master of Puppets.
Jamil Mustafa. It’s Hip Hop / Afro-beat / Funk, you can hear the Carlos Santana influence in some of his earlier songs. His whole new album is SOLID. Radio is good, but he doesn’t have Oooh Lord, Experimental Music, or Don’t Stop Dancin up on his MySpace.
Kidz in the Hall, my newest obsession.
I’m sort of stuck in a musical rut right now. I’ve been listening to 80s synthpop like OMD and Ultravox, some songs by the Cure, plus a couple of songs by Atlas Sound (which are pretty good), Ratatat, Of Montreal and TV on the Radio. Oh and Britney Spears’ new single, Womanizer.
I kinda like Fleet Foxes, but after a while all their songs seem to blend into one.
Jack Johnson
Foo Fighters
Mostly this guy. We have a show with him in about two weeks.
I listen to smooth jazz, and five songs (on a single CD) on my play list right now are:
Incognito
Song: “N.O.T.”
CD: Tales From The Beach
Vesta
Song: “Knock Me Off My Feet”
CD: Distant Lover
Sophie Milman
Song: “Agua De Beber”
CD: Sophie Milman
Gretchen Lieberum
Song: “Brazen Girl”
CD: Brand New Morning
Larry Carlton
Song: “Smiles And Smiles To Go”
CD: Larry Carlton Collection
As I type I’ve got The Concorde Fallacy by The Muckrakers playing. It’s their latest release and since I’ve only had it two days I have yet to tire of it.
John Abercrombie and Ralph Towner - Sargasso Sea
Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble - Officium
Josquin - Missa Sine Nomine, performed by the Tallis Scholars
Cassandra Wilson, Blue Skies, and Mary Coughlan’s Billie Holiday cover this week.
I hate to be one of those “they’re old stuff was better” guys but I don’t like the new O.A.R. They’ve gone from a jammy 90s college band to another Snow Patrol / One Republic / The Fray clone. Just thought I’d toss that out there.
I just downloaded **The Killers **new album Day & Age. chocolatefrog, you might like their indie retro Vegas synth pop style.
I just happen to love that one particular song, and don’t care much at all about O.A.R. as a band. I actually dislike jam bands, and am indifferent to mainstream indie rock. My tastes tend to lie more towards female singer-songwriters, trip hop, electro, post-punk, and related genres.
I’m loving Remind Me In 3 Days… by The Knux. One of the best hip-hop debuts I’ve heard in a while.

I’ll be playing some tracks from it (and a bunch more new stuff) tonight on my radio show, The Zen Arcade. 7-10PM EST, stream it here.
