What did you get for Christmas?

Canned fish

Having misplaced my Maltese falcon a year or two ago, my wife got me a replacement for the bookshelf. Of course this will mean the previous falcon will most certainly soon appear.

I am happy to report I also got a real paper book, a collection of essays on the American Civil War. Oh, an d I got a flannel shirt everyone thinks is the cat’s meow. It is from Carhart, or some such. It is nice to wear around the house.

Today, the ham radio people in the family will pass on their starter radios. That should be fun.

Thank you! (But that dress is still going to Goodwill)

My “big gift” was a pair of Bose sleep buds, little earbuds that play from a collection of tracks designed to mask noise. My wife has a bit of a snoring thing going on and foam earplugs don’t help since they’re uncomfortable, fall out and don’t do a heck of a lot when they’re in so the other solution* has been late-night relocations to the couch. These have been a mixed bag in that they’re not entirely successful but I’m still experimenting with different tracks. They ARE surprisingly comfortable to wear and have a design with little rubber spring tabs that press against the folds in the ear and keep them in place. Amusingly, the most successful track so far hasn’t been rain patters or shore sounds but rather the hum of an industrial dryer.

My younger son got me among the most cheesy kid gifts you can get: a plastic #1 Dad trophy with a football on it (I neither play nor watch football). It will take an obligatory place on the bookcase regardless.

(*I realize there is a possible medical aspect to this, etc but I’m talking from my end of the equation)

I got a Mova Globe. Pretty cool and I’d wanted one for a while. I also got a really good bottle of tequila (it actually cost more than the globe :stuck_out_tongue: ) and a box of cigars (Cuban…I ask no questions).

So, not a bad haul this year, all things considered.

I got TWO light beanies

a Shashibo cube

and a Chewbacca/C3PO hoodie/backpack.

Not much. A debit card with a $200 load and probably get my usual food cache from Hickory Farms from the neighbors (we were both traveling for Xmas). Don’t really need much else.

Well, that’s an interesting thing. I’d probably have bought one for someone if I’d seen it.

My daughter and future son-in-law gifted me with a new Keurig, a new frother, some word game puzzle books / crossword puzzle books and nice pens, oodles of chocolate, a phone case (being returned - didn’t fit my phone), a small button tin - I mean a small tin of Royal Dansk cookies (love them), and a Life Savers gummies book. From as far back as I can remember, I’ve received a Life Savers book from my Grandfather. When I was 12ish, I did not receive one as he thought I was ‘too old’ for them. I guess my upset was pretty obvious and starting the following year he gave me one Christmas until he passed. When my daughter was little, I mentioned that tradition and she started giving them to me.
My sister and her husband gifted me with a lovely cinnamon candle and a gift card to my gardening happy place. As I exclaimed my joy at the gift card, both my sister and my daughter stated they must go with me - I was informed I cannot be trusted there on my own. Harumph.
Mom, thankfully, gifted me nothing. Well, I managed to snag a bunch of her Rice Krispie bars as we left her house. Yum.

I got indigestion because I ate way too much at my brother’s. We don’t exchange gifts among the adults, so no loot.

I got clothes, mostly. The highlight was a T-shirt bearing an AT-AT with antlers and a red nose that will almost certainly become my go-to shirt for the holidays until, I dunno, I’m dead. On the other hand, one of the other shirts is one of the more potent inducements to lose weight I’ve ever seen, as it is a reminder that I’m starting to get to the size where they only manufacture shirts in Ugly and Uglier. I also scored some New England Patriots swag. I made sure to specify stuff with Pat Patriot on it. I wouldn’t say that I hate the Flying Elvis, but I’ve never fully embraced it, either.

My wife is Jewish. I’m an agnostic. Except for putting a wreath on the front door, we don’t much celebrate Christmas. We buy gifts for other people, though, and usually get ourselves a “gift” that both of us will enjoy. This year, I saw Mel Brooks’ autobiography in the wholesale club, and said “I’d like to read that.” She said, “I’ll buy it for you as a Christmas gift, but you can’t start reading it until December 25th.” I just began it and enjoying it very much.

Less than usual I’m happy to say, since what I really need is a 30-hour day to catch up. I did get a much needed new set of headphones for my laptop. I’m also getting smoked fish sent home. I also got two small Lego sets which I can finish and donate to my grandson before I go back to my house.
