What do Trump's supporters want him to do if elected?

At a family dinner this weekend, what I got from my sister-in-law’s pro-Trump tirade is that Trump didn’t really mean what he said, he won’t really do that, he is going to become presidential and will surround himself with the best people. So basically he’ll be an awesome president if he changes and doesn’t do what he says he will. :smack: Oh, and Hillary belongs in prison.

What positions? He has about three, and those have all been long dealt with…as long as you don’t count the stupid off-the-cuff bullshit he spews, which is rightly ridiculed. That’s the whole point of his campaign: all flash and no substance.

There are going to be interesting times around the Thanksgiving tables all over America this year, I’m guessing.

Yes. In my circle I know three Trump supporters. Two are a conservative Christian couple, and any question regarding Trump is answered with seething, frothing, irrational hatred of Hillary. It’s really bizarre, honestly. I mean, I’m no fan of Hillary, but I wish you all could see this. It would be funny if it weren’t tragic. We’re currently at odds because I had the gall to question how such angry responses fit with their Christian ideology- worn on their sleeves, of course.

The other is- A Fucking Lawyer! This dude has a JD, two masters degrees, and is a tax attorney. But he’s one of those miserable types, always angry and thinks the world is arrayed against him. Seriously, when he needs a new roof on his house or he gets a flat tire it’s the world out to get him. And he doesn’t care what Trump will or won’t do, he just wants the outsider to shake up the system. Though, he does detest immigrants and all Democrats. As book smart as he is, he isn’t much of a thinker and really can’t be bothered to read anything more enlightening than ESPN.com. Academically he’s very smart, but in any practical way he’s an iditot- as measured by opinions based on “facts” that are verifiably untrue.

But here is the theme I see with Trump supporters- Ignorant and Angry.

Not just a “fuck you” to the system. It’s a “fuck you” to:

  • every dateless nerd everyone used to pick on in school who went on to make a
  • politically correct dweebs who won’t let them hang titty posters in the break room.
  • smug intellectual college types with their so-called “economics”, “science” and “book learnin’”.
  • whiney Liberals constantly bitching about this, that and the other thing.
  • crazy Blacks who keep running around gang-banging and not acting right.
  • lazy welfare cases looking for a free handout.
  • immigrants looking to steal your job.
  • those fancy Starbucks jerks trying to steal Christmas.
  • pretentious big-city yuppies from New York, LA, San Fran, other cities who look down on them.
Voting for Trump isn’t a rational response, so you can’t pin his supporters down with “what do you expect him to do”. It’s the same problem that Democrats always have (with the exception of Clinton and Obama). Yes, they argue their point logically and passionately. But their perceived effeminate voice only draws big gales of stupid laughter.

Completely unsurprising given that their candidate personifies them.

Speak the True name of God and Undo Creation, effectively dumping us all into Hell.

What…?

As I asked in another thread, I wonder what happens to these kinds of people and these kinds of attitudes whether Trump wins or loses. Will there be any cognitive dissonance if he wins, or will they approve of every mistake he makes? Will it explode into something even worse if Clinton wins?

If Trump wins, I suppose that depends on what happens to their actual standard of living, the overall economy, if there are any major terrorist attacks, if we get involved in any overseas conflicts.

Look at what happened with Bush. Really up until 9/11 the whole Democrat vs Republican thing was mostly abstract political bullshit. The 90s were mostly a time of relative peace and economic prosperity. After 9/11 people got behind Bush and his invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan. A decade of war and the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression later, the right mostly keeps silent about Bush and focuses all their blame on Obama and “Liberals”.

I imagine it will be similar with Trump. his supporters will overlook whatever mistakes they can and the ones they can’t they will blame on immigrants, terrorists, Liberals, whoever.
I’m not sure what will happen if Clinton wins. Many of them might even blame the Republican party

Cognitive dissonance is irrelevant. That implies rational thinking–but this is all about emotions, not reason.
Trump won’t make the furreners go away, and he won’t bring jobs back to the factories.
But if he wins, people who are feeling scared about the future will gain a sense of hope for a few years.
They will know for sure that their guns won’t be taken away, that there are a few more patrols along to the Mexican border. They’ll sleep better for a while.

Liberals are always worried about explosions.* Relax!
People will keep on complaining, and then they’ll keep on shopping at Walmart. Life will go on.

We just lived through 8 years having a Muslim with no birth certificate in the White House. It can’t get any worse.

*seriously—if you insist on being afraid of “them”–and seeing “them” as dangerous gun-toting rednecks, it’s a form of prejudice/racism. Stop buying organic groceries at Trader Joe’s; go shopping at Walmart, and start a friendly chat with the cashiers. They’re pretty good people, even if they do watch Fox news.

Trump is the first politician whose supporters hope that he will break his promises.

Grin. I shop at Albertsons and at Vons and at Target. The few times I’ve been to a Walmart, they were much too crowded. The prices are low…but they accomplish that by short-staffing. One check-out clerk to serve twenty people in line, one bagger to serve four check-out lines. Bad business model.

And if at some point they have to face indisputable proof that not much of anything has changed, they may just say “hey, the system’s rigged, it doesn’t matter, we’ll keep on voting for whoever’s the most outrageous candidate or not at all 'cause it makes no difference”. But whatever’s wrong will still be the fault of the Liberals and no matter what happens they will take it as an article of faith that gangs of criminals are running rampant as never before, teen promiscuity and pregnancy is at an all time high and rising, folks on welfare are living large, unassimilated immigrants are taking all the jobs, the queers are taking over… and big city people or college-grad folks are looking down their noses at them ;).

My cousin is a big Trump fan and she says she is voting for him because he will bring God back to the public schools (she has no children IN public schools so I don’t get that) and he’ll save us all from the Muslims, because the only good one is a dead one.

She has also pointed out that Clinton couldn’t even satisfy her man, so how could she keep the entire country happy.

So it’s generally that mentality we’re talking about.

I want him to show us, once and for all, how long his schlong is.

My entire family are really pro-Trump. A couple of the things I’ve heard for them as to why they’re voting for him.

  • They’re tired of politicians. They want someone who says it like it is.
  • They want a businessman to run the country because he knows how to handle money.
  • He’s going to make America safe from Radical Islamic terrorists. Gotta say those three words too.
  • He’s not part of the establishment.
  • He’s looking out for the little guy. (???)
  • They can’t stand Hillary.

The last one is actually my mom’s only real reason for voting for Trump. Otherwise she couldn’t care less. When I asked her what she didn’t like about her, she just said she gets on her nerves and her voice is grating. Funny enough, both my parents have expressed an intent to move to Canada should Hillary get elected lol

LOL indeed.

They may be a little behind the times. We voted our right-wing party out a little while ago. Of course, the former (right-wing) prime minister was to the left of the current Democrats. The mayor of Calgary is a Muslim. We have “socialist” health care.

Plus, Americans can’t simply come and live here whenever they want. We have actual immigration policies of our own to keep your parents out - sorry.

I’ve encountered Americans who moved over here to Thailand because Clinton was president, because Bush was president and because Obama was president. The bottom line is anyone, regardless pf political stripe, who leaves the US due to who is president has more than a few screws loose.

Although I must admit if Trump were to win, it would seem more reasonable.

If history is anything to go by, A Trump presidency will make things worse, the people who elected Trump will take that as evidence that he system is faulty, and they will elect someone even worse next time.

Feedback loops are like that.

Lol I tried explaining to them but my mother was adamant. She just can not STAND ‘that woman’. As for the immigration thing, when I mentioned that they just doubled down and said it didn’t have to be Canada. They’d move to another country Australia or Africa or something. I didn’t even bother bringing the whole definition of ‘country’. lol
