The wife of Bath tells the tale of a young knight who, after the rape of a maiden, must search the answer to the question, “what is it that women most desire?” The knight has one year to find the answer and return to King Arthur’s court, or else he will be sentenced to death.
The knight’s journey does not go well. No matter where he goes or who he asks, he does not get a good answer. Desperate, he starts his return to Arthur’s court, when he sees a group of young maidens. As he approaches, they disappear leaving an old woman. She says that she has the answer to his question, but will only state it before the queen, and on the condition that he does whatever she asks of him. The knight agrees.
In the presence of the queen, the old woman says that what women desire most is sovereignty over their husbands. Nobody disagrees with her answer, and the old woman asks the knight to marry her. The knight agrees, albeit reluctantly.
On their wedding night, the knight is despondent over what he has gotten himself into. The old woman lectures him on the trivial nature of appearances, then gives the knight a choice: ugly and faithful or beautiful but unfaithful. The knight leaves the decision up to her. The old woman rewards him by giving him both. http://www.angelfire.com/nd/EssaysOnEnglishLit/EssaysOnEnglishLiterature.htm
Although I do love myself, I don’t spend a lot of time actually having to do it literal sense. I have an enthuastic, virile, sexy and loving husband who is more than willing to take on that responsibility.
My cryptic comment was meant to convey that I believe that our happiness is our own responsibility. Another person can not make you happy, it must come from within. Too many people spend their entire lives searching for someone to fulfill their every want and desire and are always dissappointed.
Another person may take notice my intelligence, my passion for life, my integrity and my compassion. But only I can decide if their noticing is worth my making enough changes in my behavior to warrant their continued attention.
Another person may overlook my shortcomings, forgive my wrongs or even attempt to validate my feelings and beliefs, but only I can decide if their opinions are valuable enough to make me change my behavior, my feelings or my beliefs.
No one else can give me the courage to make my decisions, only I truly know the strength of my convictions; mercy is an action and I control my actions…
Only I am in control of my laughing, my crying, my loving and my regrets.
Only I can love myself and only my opinions matter when contemplating my flaws.
Only I am able to meet my needs and desires be they physical, spiritual or emotional ones because only I can say what they are.
I am not saying that I don’t need anyone else, quite the contrary. What I’m saying is until a person believes in their own worth and value, no one else will.
I totally agree. You must love yourself before anyone else can love you. And as for your list of wants, i would argue that they are basic human needs that we have neglected to fulfill.
Come near me with that “foot rub” look in you eye, and you are likely to get kicked in the face. Nobody touches my feet but me, and then only if I have to - Ticklish!
Chocolate was a good answer, I will agree with that.
Respect of course, humor, security and everything that dpr said.
Yup. As everyone is well aware, at age 21, all the secrets of life are revealed to you. LOL is right. Good on you, mate! You seem to have the smarts to know how ridiculous that sounds.
