I’ve read (a thousand times) that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I don’t have a clue what to eat. Eggs - blah - boring. Pancakes/waffles - ditto. I’m sick of cereal, tired of bagels and I’m starting to get bored with yogurt. So let me know - inspire me.
I’ll respond before this gets moved to the appropriate forum.
Believe it or not, I try to eat smart. (If you’ve seen me, it’s hard to tell.) Breakfast is important. Since the last meal you ate was supper the night before (usually) your body’s store of energy is somewhat low (how low depends on what you ate for supper.)
What you need for breakfast is something to provide energe. What you need for breakfast depends on you. Long periods of specific eating can alter things like metabolism and body storage. (as an aside, this is a major problem with high protein/no carb diets; the body is manipulated into “expecting” proteins and begins to handle them efficiently. Then, when a carbohydrate is introduced, the body is not quite sure how to store the energy and often metabolizes it and stores it in fats.) If you are used to high carb suppers (e.g., pasta) your breakfast needs may be different than if you ate proteins for supper.
I, IMHO, eat a small amount of protein early in the morning. Specifically, I eat 2 TVP sausages. This provides long term enrgy (for me) without being heavy. I don’t get sleepy later from blood sugar crash later in the day that I would get from carbs (cereal, poptarts, etc.)
This is for me. YM, of course, MV. I suggest you try small breakfast meals, the same thing each day for a week or so and see how they affect you.
I’m not really into sweet foods, especially as the main part of the meal, so my solution is to eat food that isn’t traditionally associated with breakfast.
Favorites are cheese and crackers, leftover pizza or enchiladas (homemade), hot and sour soup, casseroles, sandwiches, or whatever sounds good at the time.
I agree about the protein, too. I find that if I just have cereal or toast first thing in the morning, I’m ravenous by 9:00.
I’m what you’d call a grazer. I always have my coffee on the way to work. Once at work I’ll eat a container of yogurt. Then in an hour or so, I’ll eat an orange. Then, in another hour or so, I’ll eat a banana or some celery.
I guess that’s it for the morning. I’d be happy to give the rest of my meals for the day, but you didn’t ask for that.
Fish! Yes, fish for breakfast provides that necessary bit of protein to really get you going.
That’s why I have an egg and lox (smoked salmon) sandwich on a bagel every morning. I know you said you’re bored with bagels, but a bagel with egg and lox never gets boring.
MMmmm! I absoultely love smoked salmon and eggs. I prefer the salmon crumbled into scrambled eggs and onions, served on top of country potatoes…
Damn, now you’ve made me hungry.
But most days, I don’t eat breakfast. I have coffee, and if I’m hungry, I’ll nibble on toast or a donut.
Occasionally, though, I will get a breakfast burrito - another wonderful food if made right. Eggs, fried potatoes, crumbled bacon or sausage, cheese, and salsa, wrapped in a flour tortilla.
I drink a SlimFast every weekday morning. I’m not on a diet, but the drink provides all the vitamins and minerals and stuff to keep me going till lunch. It’s quick, it’s easy, and not too expensive. And there are different flavors to choose from
Eggs are boring? Make a 6-egg fritatta (with whatever leftover starch and cheese and green veggie’s in your icebox). Carefully wrapped and eaten cold, it’ll last you through three or four breakfasts. Fritattas are why the Goddess gave us eggs, IMHO.
When i’m working i usually have a can of slim fast and bottle of juice. If not it could be anything from eggs to pizza to tacos.Whatever i’m in the mood for.
Ummm… I can’t eat breakfast when I get up unless I pull an 8 hour shift from say midnight to 8am. Then I’ll nab breakfast before I go to bed. I don’t know what it is but waking up then eating something makes me sick all day long.
I’ve gotten used to a Scandinavian breakfast - a cold, reasonably substantial meal. Usually I’ll have two open-faced sandwiches. Lately I’ve been in a sort of rut, but it’s a nourishing rut… one with hamburgerrygg, which is basically the same cut as Canadian bacon but lean; and one with gudbrandsdalsost, a sweet brown “cheese” made from a mixture of cows’ and goats’ milk. With that I’ll have a glass of orange juice and a glass of milk. A bit later I’ll have a cup of tea, maybe with a couple cookies if we have some good ones in the house.
Sometimes instead I’ll have leftovers from supper the night before.
Weekdays: two double espressos, in quick succession, is a good part of my balanced breakfast.
OK, the only part. I’m generally running half an hour late before I even wake up.
They don’t provide much in the way of vitamins, minerals, fibre or ‘food energy’ (ie calories), but hoo boy do they get you moving in the morning. In more ways than one.
Sorry, that wasn’t much help to the OP, I realise.
To me, breakfast is more like an experience than a meal. It all starts with first course, usually comprised of greek salad and Captain Crunch. To wash this down, I drink some V8 with celery jutting out the side of the glass. Then, I’ll usually eat a beast of some sort. I am in a “goose” phase. After this, another glass of V8 hits the spot, but I substitute the celery for a carrot. Icecream usually follows with pineapple sauce, then I’ll top off the feast with slice of pie and a raspberry tea.
Needless to say, I Break Slow, not fast.
