What Do You Like That You're Not Supposed To?

lol either chef Boyardee or "Appian way "

Actually I have a chef B family pizza kit but all it gives you id the crust and sauce … you don’t get the canned cheese or the “pepperoni” sauce … which was alleged pepperoni chopped up in the sauce …

My wife loves that movie.

I go with the individually wrapped slices.

When I was a kid in the 1950s we used to make mini-pizzas from Thomas’s English muffins, with a spoonful of spaghetti sauce and a slice of mozzarella on top, and a sprinkle of olive oil and oregano on top, toasted under the broiler in the oven. I haven’t had them for 50 years but they were wonderful. This was long before there was even box mix for pizza crust.

Candy corn, although I know each piece of sugar with corn syrup knocks gets me a day closer to my eventual heart attack. Doh!

Spaghetti-Os with franks. I don’t think I’ve ever even met anyone else who has admitted to liking the stuff.

Ragu marinara sauce is awesome, although every other Ragu flavor is gross.

Fresh steamed broccoli. Raw cauliflower (protip: don’t eat this at work. Its dryness had me coughing and my security guard fleeing because he thought I had Covid-19.)

I also love rutabagas, parsnips and turnips. Mashed rutabagas are excellent.

Trail mix gives me kidney stones. But I constantly tempt fate anyway.

Speaking of which, Bear Naked three berry granola. I use it as cereal. The reason I’m not supposed to like it is it’s pretty expensive as cereal, giving you three bowls for the price of six.

Cheap mass-market beer. I don’t especially care for beer in general so “Tastes like yellow water lol!!” is a feature, not a bug versus the pungent craft and microbrew stuff. Just give me a bottle of MGD at the barbecue or a can of Old Style after doing yardwork and I’ll be happy.

-Candy Corn
-Cake mix cake
-Lipton chicken noodle soup - not CupASoup but the kind you have to cook on the stove
-Velveeta cheese is the only cheese for grilled cheese sandwiches
-American cheese - I don’t mind the wrapped singles but I like the pre-sliced non wrapped best
-Cheapo Roma and Tony’s pizzas
-Pizza made from the Chef Boyardee box mix - I add mozz and pepperoni. OMG the crust is so good and yeasty!
-The Monkees
-Stairway to Heaven
-America (band - well the country too!) Their songs take me back to jr & sr high school
-Christian Rock
-Nickelback
-Journey

Zima.

Two pages and no mention of Velveeta?! (close with Rotel dip though). Good for dips, mac and cheese (though I do put Parm and Cheddar in as well) and casseroles. Melty cheese-like goodness

I did that, as a kid in the late 1970s to early 1980s, although in the toaster oven rather than the broiler. It was one of the standard afterschool snacks. We also made sort-of steak sandwiches on white sandwich bread with Steak-ums.

That’s a common reaction. Real maple is thinner and more astringent than what most folks have grown up on. I prefer the real thing but it’s too trivial to argue about.

I like brussels sprouts boiled to mush. Really. I know it’s disgusting but…

Candy corn. Ketchup on my hot dog. Cigarettes (I refer to myself as a smoker who doesn’t smoke). Fruitcake.

I like lotsa stuff I’m not supposed to like, including:

  • Disco
  • Barry Manilow
  • Cauliflower
  • Lima Beans
  • Spaghetti-Os
  • Cheetos
  • Pop Tarts
  • The movie Xanadu

I swear I don’t slow down and rubberneck if I’m passing the scene of a bad car accident.

But some of the “90 day fiance” stuff is on the schedule for the DVR. Apparently I’m not interested in car wrecks, but train wrecks are another thing…

I wonder what percentage of these gross things that we like comes down to nostalgia? Of course I like real maple syrup but I don’t mind Log Cabin and other “breakfast syrups” because that’s all we had growing up.

Lately, god help me, I’ve been getting Little Caesars pizza almost every Friday night. I don’t especially like their regular pizza but the new Cheeser! Cheeser! pizza (asiago crust, blobs of ‘fresh’ mozzarella on top) is so self-loathingly satisfying.
