Left front: Some coins, nail clippers
Right front (that little pocket that Levi’s have): Knife
If I’m out and about I’ll have a wallet and comb in the right back pocket and car keys in front right pocket.

checks
Back left: Wallet.
Front left: Lip goo.
Front right: Keys.
I carry a sling bag that has my offline life in it.
Left front: a gum wrapper.
Right front: eyedrops.
Back pockets: nothing.
In the school bag/purse: water bottle, hand sanitizer, keys, wallet, student ID, phone, pocket pack of tissues, granola bar, pocket knife, pens, pencils, mp3 player. Oh, and assorted school books.
Depends on what I’m wearing that day.
If I am wearing BDUs:
Right front pocket: ID holder (stuffed full of ID card, meal card, credit card, debit card, room key, and various bits of required paperwork that I always need to carry around), keychain with padlock keys, “John Wayne” can opener, and my SwissBit swiss army knife with built-in USB thumb drive (yes, I know I am awesome, thank you )
Left front pocket: Usually just my challenge coin, a set of nail clippers if I have them, and my Chinese name seal if I am carrying it in my pockets instead of in my laptop bag. A ziplock bag containing instant coffee packets and Splenda packets to keep me going through the day (my work area lacks a coffee machine because we are all collectively and individually too cheap to invest in one) Any papers I hastily folded up and stuffed in my pocket.
Right cargo pocket: reflective belt (for wear at night and in foggy weather since it turns out people in camouflage uniforms are relatively difficult to see). Apple, energy drink, and/or headphones if any of those are needed but I can’t carry them in my bag.
Left cargo pocket: Cell phone.
Bonus pocket: BDUs have a little fold-over of fabric down the middle on the buttonhole side, so the buttons won’t show, I clip a pen into the resulting pocket
When I’m in my blues, it’s the same thing, but I don’t carry a pen (for fear of it breaking and ruining my uniform), and the cell phone and reflective belt find their way into jacket pockets or my bag.
In civvies, more of the same, but the ID holder or a wallet goes in the back pocket, cell phone in a jacket pocket or on a clip.
If I’m carrying a bag, it’s either a camera bag containing a camera, an extra lens, and a flash, along with a bottle of advil, or a laptop bag containing a laptop, charger cord, headphones, mouse, ipod, a small Chinese dictionary, some pens, loose papers that I need, sometimes my Wacom tablet, and my Chinese name seal.
If I’m in PT gear, pocket contains an iPod if I’ve got it with me, ID holder with all it’s required stuff (and my challenge coin) tucked inside), and my keys and phone are in my camelbak pouch.
Right front pants pocket:
About 10 or so keys in one keyring, including an universal key for plastic piggy banks (Yeah, I don’t know why I carry it either. I don’t remember breaking into a piggy bank in 25 years or so.) and a bottle cap opener from the 50s.
Left front pants pocket:
An USB memory stick and about 5 euros in misc. coins.
Right back pants pocket:
A wallet
Left back pants pocket:
A cell-phone and a comb
Jacket breast pocket:
A hacked iPod Touch with mostly wireless networking related programs installed.
I just dumped out my purse to wash it. It’s a small PacSafe 100. I like it because it’s a good size and has a lot of useful security features (embedded cables to prevent slashing, locking zipper, etc) that make me feel more secure on crowded Chinese buses and the like.
let’s see what we have:
My wallet with
-copy of my passport
-a list of emergency phone numbers
-a US ATM card and a Chinese ATM card
-my California ID
-small change
Keys- building key, apartment key, office key and mystery key
A pile of Chinese money, mostly small change
iPod mini and headphones
Cheap cell phone, with an Animal Crossing cell phone charm
Pilot V5 pen (best pens ever)
Sunglasses
Emergency glad-rag (if you don’t know, don’t ask)
Small packet of tissues since public restrooms here don’t provide TP
2 magic pink beans that some kid from Cameroon gave me
A toy cat key chain that once saved my life in Nepal
Right front: wallet, bills, change.
Left front: keys, lip balm; I’m prone to chapping sometimes.
That’s it. I don’t like a lot of crap in my pockets and they’re seriously full with that minimal list as it is. I can’t imagine carrying much more than that.
I used to carry a Spyderco Endura combo edge in my right front pocket, with the clip on the outside to keep it from sliding down. (Though I’m left handed, the clips for most knives are on the wrong side and I’m practically ambidextrous for most tasks.) I can’t carry a knife in Japan, though.
Nothing in my back pockets except for random receipts I might need to keep until I get rid of them at home, or money I want to keep separate from my main bundle.
When I first started carrying a wallet I used to carry it in my right rear pocket, like most men, but I had a diagnosis of slight scoliosis when I was 14 and switched to the front in an attempt to correct postural problems.
Working at Wal-Mart, this is in my khakis:
belt: sheathed box cutter
left pocket: pen, lip balm, at least three industrial-strength paper towels (lots of spills in grocery dept), one quarter (note: the first night I worked, a teenage girl approached me in the women’s room and asked if she could borrow a quarter. I’ve kept at least one quarter in my pocket in case it ever happened again)
right pocket: a baggie w/trail mix in it for when I start to slow down.
Love, Phil
