What does your Straight Dope nickname mean?

Mine means I didn’t spend enough time thinking up a good user name.

Years ago, before I had my own computer, my pa-in-law offered to put us on his AOL account so we could see what this new-fangled internet thing was all about. I tried some other names but I didn’t want to be Ophelia number 462, so I tried “aseymayo,” being fairly sure it would not have already been claimed. When we got our own set-up (although without the AOL part), I just kept the name.

Asey Mayo is the detective in a series of books by Phoebe Atwood Taylor. I’m nothing like him actually - he’s a tall, male New Englander and I’m a short, er, ah, I mean, petite female mid-westerner.

I could change it, but the name of Phoebe’s other detective, Leonidas Witherall, just takes too long to type.

Tripler.

Tripler was given to me on a MUCK, as a name that appeared in the Doonesbury strip. I have yet to find anyone named “Lieutenant Tripler” in the strip. But, it fit at the time, and it fits now. . .

Tripler

Back in '84, I had a close encounter with the God Freyr in a circle for Winter Solstice. He and I have been friends ever since.

Freyr is one of the Vanir. After the First War, between the Aesir and the Vanir, there was an exchange of “hostages” and Freyr went with his sister, Freya, the leader of the Vanir, to live in Asgard with the Aesir. He also rules over Alfheim, one of the Nine Worlds on Yggdrasill. He is leader of the “Light Elves.”

When I first go online with a local BBS, I needed a handle and “Freyr” was the first thing to spring to mind. In North America, it’s pretty rarely used.

People have asked how the name is pronounced. I say it: fray-r (the “e” is pronounced as a long “a”).

Democritus was a natural philosopher circa 560 BC. He was the philosopher who came up with the concept of an atom. I love philosophy and physics, so he seemed to fit. For the longest time, my nick was archangel. This was from back in the BBS days. Actually, up ti’ a couple months ago, my ICQ nick was archangel.

A good friend of mine used to call me “prickly” because when I sm in a cranky mood I vsn throw some pretty sharp verbal barbs. Porcupines are prickly, and my first name is Barb, so it just kind of fit.

Uniball = In ancient Mesopotamia, a slang for “Tough as nails and twice as clever”

Well, I was going about the registration process, and “Uneasy Rider” by Charlie Daniels came on the radio. 'Nuff said.

I’ve shared homes with many cats, but never a purebred; all of them have been just moggies, alley cats, mutts, whatever you want to call them. In some cat-loving circles the politer term for such critters is “randombred.” So since I’ve lived only with random cats, Catrandom. (Also, it’s rarely taken.)

From the species name of the American Crow, Corvus brachyrhynchos.

beagledave, what a sweet picture!

What brachyrhynchos said.

Silver Fire is the combined names of two Franklin Mint dragons.

For the one or two of you, if that many, who care AND don’t know, it doesn’t mean much but I’ve given up on changing it because I have an identity, however uninteresting, associated with it. For some completely uncharacteristic reason I chose NOT to go by my real name here. Not that I like that any better, but it’s easier to remember.

It might mean more if I believed in jumping out of airworthy airplanes.

Contrary to what seems obvious, I did not get my name from the No Doubt song (even though I am a fan). I got the name simply because that’s what I feel like a lot of the time - just a girl trying to fight her way out of the background.
Does anyone know of any way to change your handle without messing up your post count and stuff? I can deal with mine, but I have thought of a different one that I like better. Thanks!

What’s your screen name origin?

Undernet

Dire Wolf is one of my (many) favorite Grateful Dead songs.

I also have much fondness for wolves and their canis familiarus descendants.

Nocturne is a name for a special piece of music that was originally meant to be played only at certain hours (from sundown to sunrise I think). Since I like the night, I chose it, but I had a few other reasons.
I’m a pianist. Chopin (among others) wrote many nocturnes for the piano.
One of my favorite bands, Better Than Ezra, was going to call one of the albums Nocturnes (but changed the name before it was released). Coincidentally, that album is my favorite of all of them.

Martin Gardner wrote a column for Scientific American called Mathematical Games from 1965 until 1986. Every so often he would tell of an encounter with his good friend Dr. Irving Joshua Matrix and his beautiful daughter Iva. He usually talked about numerology and had some scam where he would disappear after collecting money from supporters. I lurked for a while here and one day when I decided to post, the name DrMatrix just sprang to mind.

Sure, just e-mail an administrator like TubaDiva@aol.com .

She can give you a new name. You will keep your post count and all of your older posts will show the new name. It will look kinda wierd if some one makes a comment to you using your old name, but that’s how it works.

Well, I have spirit.

And I’m kind of mundi.

No? Okay. My first ever post to this board was in this thread whose OP questioned the artistic value of free verse. I happen to be a bit fond of some free verse so I chose a name to reflect that. The paraphrase in my sig is one I have always been fond of and one which I continually find application for on this board.

Oh, and

Sorry Ashtar, ‘at’ is taken.

You can be nat.

As in “not at?”
