What game(s) would you want modernized?

Search and wait no longer! It’s even network multiplayer.

Eew, no. That style is exactly why I couldn’t get into Baldur’s Gate after the glorious awesomeness of the Gold Box.

Seriously, give the Spiderweb games a look. They’re pretty much Gold Box games, though without the D&D license.

“Star Control 2”, the best game I’ve ever played in my life (I know there’s supposed to be a playable adaptation of the thing, but my only half assed attempt to dl it was met with frustration, to say the least)
And “M.U.D.S. – Mean Ugly Dirty Sport” (a Blood Bowl like game, years before a Blood Bowl adaptation was even planned.)

ETA: by the way, did anyone here play the
Deathtrack game?

There’s a free version (“The Ur-Quan Masters”) at Sourceforge, and GoG has Star Control 1 & 2 for $5.99.

I’ll give it a try (wasnt much of a success last time. I hope there’s a map, dont know wth is my old SC2 box). By the way, can anyone answer this question: I was always always convinced that there werent any real voices in SC2 when you talked to the aliens, just (very good) text and (usually very good) music. But when I check on youtube some clips from SC2, every alien seems to be talking. Is it me blanking out, or was there a deluxe later version of SC2 with voices, or a difference between the US release and the European one?
(Note, I am talking about Star Control 2, not 3)
God, when I first checked this thread I had, except for Star Control 2, not many ideas coming in, but now I’m being assailed by visions of Syndicate or Midwinter floating in my room. Ha, it’s as depressing as it’s fun. I’m starting to reminisce about CPC games (Captain Blood, Skateball…)

According to the Wiki article, the 3DO version had “enhanced multimedia presentation”; perhaps that means the voices? The Sourceforge version does have the voices; I don’t know about the GoG one.

Oh, Syndicate and Midwinter! Loved those. I keep hoping they’ll turn up on GoG or something, especially Syndicate.

I enjoyed Exile and Avernum mightily.

Damn, I had clean forgot about *Syndicate *- probably because the sequel was so abysmal.
Put me down for a modern Persuadertron-fueled rampage too.

I agree, but I hope they’d fix the “runaway lead” factor involved with it. A single policy upgrade could turn you from a middle of the road faction into an absolute economic behemoth.

Yes, it was Idiot Savant. And Virgil just about shit himself every time he had to interact with my half-ogre. It’s also pretty amusing to play a dwarf, as it confuses Virgil. Virgil is fun to have around, though of course not really useful if you’re playing a tech character. He’s great for a mage, though. Especially an evil mage.

Nope, haven’t tried TEE yet. I’ve been thinking of picking it up. I wonder if someone has written a mod that allows the characters to go to higher levels?

Bookmarked, thanks!

I always use the website Can You Run It? to figure out whether my computer can run a game. It’ll ask to install a small addon but it isn’t malware; I’ve used the site for a long time.

For whatever reason, it seems to run best if used in Internet Explorer, so you may want to do that.

I came in to say Elite, too. If you haven’t tried it, I recommend Wing Commander: Privateer Gemini Gold. The missions are mostly randomly generated and there was no story last time I played it (although they seem to have added a campaign mode) but it’s lots of Elite-style fun.

Now that I think about it, a remake of the original Wing Commander would be cool.

Also, F-Zero. The N64/GameCube versions couldn’t hold a candle to the original.

The GoG version of Star Control 2 apparently comes with a map, and I think the Sourceforge one does too. However, just in case after a bit of googling I found one online.

Silent Service (WWII Submarine Combat)
Computer Ambush (Original written in Basic, you set it up, hit the button and what happens happens)
M1 Tank Platoon
Kennedy Approach (an addictive air traffic control game)

Yup, there’s one - look up Circle of Eight, they’re the main modding group for TOEE and their modpack supports levels up to 40 I think (among a LOT of other things).
That being said, I’ve always been ambivalent about removing the cap. On one hand, well, levelling is half the fun of D&D and there’s nowhere to go once you’re level 10 and geared in über crafted items from head to toe.
OTOH, encounters are fixed and don’t gain in power as you rise above the original cap (which is already high enough to mow through most encounters, gods excepted) so removing it kind of trivializes the endgame I suppose. I opted to leave it on myself.

As fun as the combat was(really, laser guided fireballs are awesome), I got the game just after release and dear Og was that game a rushed, buggy mess. I seem to recall it having a 50% chance of crashing every time you zoned and some rather moronic design choices like not including actual item descriptions in the game, not telling you that some spells require reagents, but instead of bothering you with said reagents it would silently take some of your money.
So, you used Identify(which you thought were free, but in fact cost 100 gp) on that sword you found and you now know it is a Sword of Thwuppage +3, awesome, of course you still have no idea what it actually does, if you wanted to know that you had to find a D&D manual and look it up. :smack:

Back to the original question, I’d like to see a remake of Vagrant Story, great game if you don’t mind the box puzzles, but the menus were slow and the game mechanics encouraged you to change your weapon constantly to suit the enemy type, meaning you had to navigate said slow menus every other kill.

Yup, the game was buggy as hell - it’s a Troika game. No surprises there.
Still, the patches and fanpatches have fixed it pretty well, with the only real remaining problem being the autosave. Despite lots of effort, turning them on will result in lots of weird crashes, or corrupted saves, or both. But if you turn them off and acquire a good manual save discipline (hey, aren’t we all about old school in this thread ?!), it’s pretty smooth sailing.
The obscurity of features and obtuseness of the interface remain to an extent, but the Co8 modpack did make the spell descriptions and the in-game help a lot clearer.

Stick with your bookmark to the SRD for the magic items, though

Not to mention, since it’s a PS1 game it looks like wet ass now. Jagged wet ass. As good as the game is, I tried to play it again a couple years back and just gave up mid-intro. It’s funny how even old 2D games can still look somewhat OK (to me at least), but old 3D is just ugh.

Transport Tycoon Deluxe, with improved (much improved) AI and plugs for the gaping exploit holes. There’s been several attempts to make a similar tycoon/builder game, even by the same designer, but they don’t look very good. I’d say I’d like a revamp of Railroad Tycoon, but I haven’t played the sequels so I don’t know if I’m wishing for something that already exists.
