I had to go to school today. It is the first day of classes and all of the fraternity and sorority kids were wearing t-shirts proudly proclaiming that they need to pay to have friends.
I didn’t punch any of them in the face! \o/
Sometimes I wonder why I decided to go to a Big Ten school, seriously.
Yesterday and the day before, I got a lot of our food made for Rosh Hashanah. Now, when we come home from services on Thursday and Friday (we celebrate two days of Rosh Hashanah), we’ll just have to pop the trays in the oven to warm them up. I made stuffing, noodle kugel, zucchini kugel, and roasted carrots with honey. The stuffing looks absolutely beautiful, hopefully it will taste as good as it looks. Mr. Neville and his mom will be working on the turkey and brisket (respectively) today. He makes great turkey, and she makes great brisket.
We cook our stuffing in a pan, rather than stuffing it inside the turkey. This is partly something I just got used to doing when my sister used to be a vegetarian, and partly because stuffing can harbor bacteria from poultry.
We tried a new recipe, which turned out perfect! Beef satay with peanut dipping sauce.
Instead of using store-bought sugary pb, I processed a bunch of peanuts with peanut oil and kosher salt in the food processor. Slightly chunky texture, but the flavor of the resulting sauce was very good. I bet if I left the nuts in the processor longer, it would get smoother. I’m psyched to try more nut butters. (mmm, macadamia)
45 posts to the SDMB in 24 hours. Including a lengthy OP and fairly decent job of holding my own in the thread thereunder. And no thrashes or two-way pissing contests!
I covered a scout meeting for my son’s troop - even though it’s no longer my “job”. I went to get info for the Scouting for Food canned food drive in November, so I’m doubly proud of myself (minus a few points for the shameless plug). Getting home after 9:30 is not so much fun.
I made up a (not very complicated) recipe (which has probably been “invented” by thousands before me). I took boneless chicken thighs, rubbed them with lemon rind, folded them over, placed a lemon slice between the layers, and baked 'em. Got the lemony flavor all the way through and really moist meat.
Reenacted some stories my grandfather told me about his experiences in WW2. I played my grandfather and a Japanese teacher played the part of the Japanese soldiers. All for the amusement and edification of Japanese junior high school students.
They liked the part where my grandfather slept while the Japanese soldiers escaped from the POW camp. I didn’t mention that the Japanese soldiers charged a machine gun and died like flies, or that the Japanese killed prisoners who wouldn’t take part in the escape.
Well, my wife and daughter are out of town, and today is a holiday, so I could have sat at home in my boxers, ordered pizza, and watched TV all day, but I went to my office and wrote 1,000 words on a paper I’m trying to finish. And I went out and got flowers, and food to put in the fridge so when I bring them home from the airport late tonight, it won’t just be my lame ass they come home to.
