I want to make a Galette des rois for this Epiphany, and this on-line recipe calls for almond paste.
What is almond paste? would it be in the baking section at Safeway, or is it more exotic than that?

It looks pretty hard to source. Here’s an on-line recipe.

I generally can find it at the grocery store, and sometimes luck into it at Big Lots, where it’s much cheaper. If you can’t find it pre-prepared, there are lots of recipes out there to make it yourself. I haven’t tried that myself, but it looks pretty straightforward.
Should be in the baking aisle, next to the marzipan. But don’t get marzipan, it’s not the same stuff.
Just realised that it might be available at our local Italian deli. I’ll try there, but if not, thanks for the recipes for how to make it.
Amazon has it.

Its always been available at any reasonably sized grocery store, even in rural areas. I always see the same brand – Odense – and it looks like this. (they also make marzipan, don’t buy that). I’m like 90% sure I’ve bought it at Target at least once. You find it near chocolate chips, sprinkles, and other “baking add-ins”.
Almond paste was originally handed down by the gods to only the most select of mortals to be eaten straight from the hand of Zeus. From that lofty beginning, it can now be found in the baking section of any grocery store. But it probably still ought to be classified as a Schedule 1 drug.
My sister and I have made wedding cakes for three family weddings so far. I bake, she decorates. In all three cases, we use a cake recipie (from Martha Stewart), which uses almond paste for half of the shortening (butter for the rest). Best damned wedding cake you ever saw!
(It takes a full #10 can of paste for a three-tier cake!)
Uhh, no offense, but if I want to look at it, I can ask the photographer to snap a couple of photos.
How’s it stack up in the roster of best damn wedding cakes I ever tasted?
Found it at Safeway, but it seems to be one of those things they just bring at Christmas. It was in the same area as all of the fruitcakes, now at 50% off.
Thanks, all!
I see it in many grocery stores starting in November. You could call around and ask if they carry it. There is a local grocery store here that carries a lot of ethnic foods, and a lot of Italian foods. They sell it in the case with the cheese, tortillas, and pizza dough, slices wrapped in cellophane. I bought some, crumbled it up, to use in making almond cookies.
