Where can I get good marzipan?

I’m indulging in one of my trashy romance novels and the hero in this saga is a fan of marzipan. So, naturally, I would like to try some. But only the good stuff.

Google shows lots of brands and vendors but I’d rather not risk buying an inferior product. Can anyone offer a personal recommendation?

Just the straight almond paste or a marizpan’d chocolate? In the US, I don’t know if there’s a systematically wide brand of marzipan. For the chocolates, Ritter Sport is probably among the easier to find, marizpan has a red packaging.

Ritter Sport shows as being available at Walmart and Target, hopefully you’re close to one of those that carries a selection of Ritter Sport including the marzipan. If you’ve never had Ritter Sport, they are somewhat reminiscent of a KitKat bar, but better(in my estimation). If you turn out to not like them, I’m sure RoxyStar will be glad to help you finish it.

I have always found Ritter Sport to be reliably good chocolate and reasonably priced. I would always chose the dark chocolate varieties because I find milk chocolate to usually be too sweet, YMMV.

@RitterSport

Yeah, Ritter Sport marzipan chocolate is decent stuff, if the US version is produced the same as in Germany. It’s my father’s favorite chocolate.

If you want the real good stuff, look out for Lübecker marzipan.

Haha! Yeah, dark chocolate with marzipan is maybe my favorite Ritter Sport product.

I prefer See’s marzipan. A larger marzipan ratio to chocolate, but the marzipan is wonderful and not dry as some lesser marzipan can be. Dark chocolate only, as it should be.

My sister used to get her boss a 1 lb box of all marzipan chocolates for his birthday.

See’s anything is usually excellent. I’ll have to try their marzipan (and of course dark chocolate as the gods decreed) next time I order.

It appears both Walmart and Target near me carry Ritter Sport, so I will be looking next time I’m near either store

Thanks!

If they happen to have this, it’s also delicious:

Much more marzipan per chocolate.

So you’re looking for chocolate-covered marzipan?

I’m used to buying just marzipan (in gourmet shops, and there’s a Swiss German sausage chalet near us that sells it) (in a small tube, sort of looks like polenta), so it was odd to see all the recommendations.

It was like if someone asked about “really good cherries” and all the responses talked about chocolate-covered ones.

But the OP said “Thanks”, so I guess that’s what they were looking for. And, other than the classic “Visions of Sugar Plums”, it IS better with chocolate around it…

This is where I get my fix for Hungarian foods

It looks like the Solo company is of Czechoslovakian origin and I can’t vouch for this particularly product but it looks like a good price.

I’ve driven up to the Vernon Hills store front before but its been years.

Anyway, pure marzipan is a bit of an acquired taste but was my Hungarian mother’s favorite confection.

My mother, who is Norwegian, buys this kind, so it must be pretty good. Norwegians eat a lot of marzipan, particularly at Christmas time. One of the peculiar Norwegian Christmas traditions is to hide a blanched almond in bowls of rice porridge on Christmas Eve. Whoever gets the almond in their bowl “wins” a marzipan pig. (See below.) My sister and I had to lobby hard to get this changed to a prize we actually wanted…

Since I know nothing about it, I have no idea if it’s supposed to be chocolate covered or not. Hence my question.

So, it’s in the blood? I’m half Hungarian, and I love marzipan.

Isn’t there a tradition of marzipan fruit, or marzipan shaped and colored to look like miniature fruits?

This. ^

RitterSport is fine, but this is better.

Yes, that is correct.

I mentioned that first thing.

Yes! They’re still available, but I can’t remember the brand, It’s got a large flat box that’s maybe red(?) and has a clear plastic front.

They’re good, but like Froot Loops there is a hint of disappointment because the different shapes and colors actually taste the same but you expect them not to.
