Where is the love for marzipan?

It’s the mildest, yummiest thing going. Ritter Sport dark chocolate with marzipan, in particular, is becoming quite an addiction. Yet when I talk about it to friends, I get an earful of, “Ew! Marzipan!” C’mon. How can anyone keep their mitts off those wee marzipan fruits? (Then again, when I Google Imaged “marzipan,” up popped sculptured BABIES. GROSSOUT! Go look!)

That’s good stuff. I don’t have much use for marzipan on its own, but a chocolate coating makes it. I like the See’s marzipan, too, which is usually the last thing people leave in the box. Trader Joe’s sells a nice stollen at Christmas time that has a marzipan filling.

Ew! Marzipan!

I’ve developed a tolerance and occasional craving for marzipan since living out in Central Europe, where they seem to have a particular love for marzipan (there is even a marzipan museum in Szentendre, Hungary, which, amidst other confectionary kitsch, features a life-sized sculpture of Michael Jackson, made of marzipan.)

Still, that stuff is usually too sickly sweet for me to take in anything but the smallest of doses. I enjoy about one square of that Ritter Sport marzipan bar from time to time. Otherwise, if I’m going for Ritter Sport, it’s the butter biscuit or cornflake one I reach for.

I adore marzipan, especially in Stollen during Christmastime–but I have been known to eat it by itself, too.

Hey, somebody ate off part of his nose!

Marzipan? Yum!

There are different qualities, though. You’ve got your old dry stuff made from ground beans. And, onm the other hand, your fresh stuff made with real almonds. I’ve got a baker downtown who makes the best stuff ever. However, I’m off sugar so I can never, ever have it again. Probably just as well; all really good marzipan does is make you crave more marzipan.

My mom and I both love it. I usually give her some every Christmas from the Wisconsin Cheeseman: http://www.wisconsincheeseman.com/Old-World-Marzipan-P548C69.aspx. I don’t have a gourmet palate, but to my tastes this is very good stuff.

I love marzipan, too, and like Caprese, love it especially in stollen, or any coffeecake or croissant. I am always mystified by how many people don’t like it. But it leaves more for me, so that’s okay.

I can only ever eat about one piece of it before I become sick of it.

I’ll eat it, like it, then realize if I have any more, I’ll puke.

Turkish Delight, on the other hand, I could eat endlessly(especially Fry’s)

I love marzipan AND I’ve been to the marzipan museum! It was a thing of glory to behold (actually the Houses of Parliament were more impressive than MJ) The cakes in the lobby are kick-ass.

I’ve been to a lot of places and eaten a lot of marzipan. Ritter Sport marzipan is certainly a favourite in this house. However until you’ve been to Toledo and bought a fresh box of Mazapán de Toledo, you haven’t tasted anything.

Marzipan is ok, I find Homestar and Strongbad to be the stars though. But her answering machine is pretty funny.

A former co-worker brought some marzipan back when she went to visit family in Germany. Oh, that stuff was good! I love it and it’s a struggle to eat it in small amounts even when I know gorging on it will make me unhappy later.

I love marzipan, as long as it’s real almonds and not the ersatz peanut stuff. There ought to be a law…

the best marzipan is the stuff I make myself, though. Easier to control the sweetness and consistency that way.

What is your recipe? How expensive is the end result?

Yup. Being half ground-up nuts and half sugar, it is about the most fattening stuff you can imagine. Underweight people who want to fatten up are advised to eat marzipan.

Here is its highest and best use.

Mmm, love it. Those Ritters are the food of the gods.

Everyone who loves marzipan must try the Anton Berg marzipan:

My family is Danish and I get it sent here a few times a year. Yum! They’ve got this kiwi marzipan in dark chocolate that is to DIE for.
