Heh - I was a witness to a collision about a decade ago in winter. I was in the left lane since I was going to turn left fairly soon, and was being tailgated on an icy downhill slope - I was driving as fast as road conditions would allow, and there was plenty of room around me. I said to my passenger, “I’m going to move to the right and let this asshole pass me and have his accident somewhere else.” He blew by me on the left, then proceeded to spin out of control at the bottom of the hill as he tried to stop for a red light and ended up hitting two cars in two different lanes. I stopped to be a witness to the collision, and got to hear his rationale - “I wasn’t breaking the speed limit!” Dude, you just hit two other cars trying to stop for a red light - if that isn’t enough proof that you weren’t driving safely, I don’t know what will convince you.
I guess I just lack whatever intellectual mechanism it is to have this heightened awareness of the laws when it comes to the guy in front of me while simultaneously willfully breaking a different law… particularly when my own offense is proven to cause far more accidents and fatalities.
