What is Diogenes the Cynic's Condition Called

Jesus Christ.

What a tool.

What? There’s a lot of posts in this thread. How the fuck am I supposed to know which one you’re talking about?

What kind of accomodation would they require? They’re in front. They don’t need anything. And for the record, I was only ever talking about people who were going the limit or faster in the left lane, not slower.

Often, yes.

Yes to both.

I’ll break down my personal feelings this way, though. I don’t like getting behind slowpokes in the left lane either, I find it annoying (especially when you can see that they’re talking on a cell phone, oblivious), but I dislike even more the kind of people who tailgate and blow their horns and flash their high beams and weave in and out of traffic. I’m not talking about when they’re stuck behind some codger going 50 in a 55, but when they’re behind somebody going 60 in a 55 and are incensed because they want to go 70. I find that kind of road behavior bullying, and bullying bothers me more than simply being slow and clueless.

Noted, but it doesn’t seem to me that I do that more than anybody else.

That much is obvious from your posting style.

Its not that you do it in more threads or anything, its that when you get onto a thread you just. don’t. stop. That’s why we call it the Dio Show–when you take an interest in a thread regarding any even halfway controversial topic, it is GOING to balloon out to five pages of you baldly asserting your opinion as fact, and then giving ground an inch at a time for another five pages, with occasional returns to your bald opinion when someone asks you to make a modified summary statement including your previous amendments and discussion.

I’ll rephrase: why do you care?

Fair enough. At least you’re consistent.

But surely, then, if you concede that both speeding and driving in the left lane can, under the right circumstances, be considered not to be a real requirement (because they aren’t enforced), then what happens to your argument about traffic flow?

You’ve argued, on prior occasions, that someone traveling the speed limit cannot, by definition, be impeding traffic. But if both the speeder and the left-lane hog are breaking the letter of the law, but are also not being busted for it, wouldn’t it be in everyone’s best interests (for the sake of traffic flow) for the left-lane hog to move over to the right as soon as practicable and safe?

I agree with you about the bullies. But i also assumed that, when we talk about left-lane hogs, we’re talking not about people who simply move into the left lane when they are not the fastest car on the road; we’re talking about people who also refuse to move back to the right when it is safe to do so in order to allow faster traffic to pass.

For example, say the limit is 65, and traffic in the right lanes is going 60. Car A is going 65, and Car B is going 70. Car A pulls into the left lane to pass the traffic going 60. If Car B pulls up behind car A and starts tailgating and flashing his lights, then i agree with you that he’s a bullying asshole. But i also believe that, for the sake of traffic flow, Car A is obligated to move back to the right when a space opens up in order to allow faster traffic to pass. He can pull back to the left again to pass more cars going 60 if he wants to, but he shouldn’t just sit in the left lane permanently and prevent people from getting by. There are people who drive like this all the time, and it’s infuriating.

Anyway, i wanted to quote that paragraph from your post again, for a different reason:

See, despite my point above, i think that this is a perfectly reasonable post. Even if people disagree with you about the specifics here, they’re unlikely to take exception to the manner or even the general content of your argument.

Notice how different this post is, for example, from the series of posts in the prior thread, where you denied on multiple occasions that Minnesota has a law requiring drivers to keep right, and then, when it was shown to you, you cast doubts upon the citation itself and then claimed that the law is irrelevant anyway because it’s never enforced.

Why all of that obtuseness, when simply posting what you’ve posted right here would have made your position very clear, and also given people no cause to think that you’re wilfully stubborn? Why does it take five pages of trainwreck, plus a separate pit thread, in order for you to formulate your (perfectly reasonable) argument is a reasonable fashion?

Well, i don’t claim to have run a sufficiently-sized random sample to evaluate the truth of your claim. But in the end, this sort of thing is, at least in part, a matter of perception, don’t you think? I guess it’s possible that everyone in threads like this has it in for you, and is just fucking with you in order to make your life miserable, but there are also some of us who think you have been a good person to have around on these boards, and who perceive a change in your posting style in recent times.

This is known as the Loop in the rollercoaster. Dio has now suckered some poor soul into going back to the start of the discussion, a position that offers him the greatest scope for subtly changing his position. This allows him to claim that he has been misrepresented all along, usually accompanied by a claim of persecution. To keep things interesting, he may concede inaccuracy on some small issue, prompting four different people to post “Thank you”, and one to declare him a “Class act”.

Interestingly, after coming out of the Loop of the rollercoaster, the thread should have picked up speed, but instead will either fizzle out on a flat track as posters lose interest, or hit a wall very quickly as posters lose interest even quicker.

God I hope its a brick wall.

Dude, it’s just an internet message board. If you’re not having fun, stop. So what if people think you’re running away? You don’t owe them anything.

Very well said.

He is having fun. Attention is fun.

Regards,
Shodan

That’s funny, especially the “Loop” and the “Class act”

I wonder if we can get some icons added to threads so we know where this is happening.

Maybe a little TV with “Dio” on the screen

Or a train wreck, a few cars at odd angles all piled up

I’m not even Italian, but my first thought if I saw that icon would be “Why are they showing God on TV?”

No, you need a short video clip from that latest disaster porn movie 2012? starring John Cusak. Maybe the driving scene where he is escaping from LA? as it crumbles all around him.

And it would be quite symbolic as well. All the distruction is the Dio show, while Cusak and family escaping and dodging all the epic destruction represent the more reasonable posters just trying to get through the fucking Dionized thread alive.

And come to think of it, Dio’s posts are well represented by the neutrinos in the movie. Pretty much a lot of fucking nothing thats virtually unmeasurable causing a shitload of destruction due to their sheer numbers.

Thank you for posting this. You’re a classy guy, bucketybuck.

Wait, did I do that wrong?

I know what you mean concerning Dio’s approach toward argumentation. (I’ve mentioned it before myself, and it’s esp. frustrating to me because he and I share almost all political views in common as far as I can tell. We just have very different ideas about the best way to justify these views in discussion.)

But I do honestly want to know–does it ever actually really happen that someone in the left lane going the speed limit is given a ticket for impeding traffic?

377 posts about this shit?

Every time I think I have no life, I’m gonna look at this thread.

Getting a ticket? I don’t know.

Getting pulled over? I don’t know.

Wa State Patrol implies in their interview that they would pull you over even if going the speed limit if impeding traffic. But I’m not aware of an actual incident that can be cited.

What I do know (as in the 99.99999999999% sure kind of know), is that Dio doesn’t have access to the information to be able to say it never happens. Furthermore, his conclusion that it has never happened because he’s never seen it is pretty bizarre for a fully functioning adult.

Sounds like you are saying this thread just may be the best thing going in your life right now?
