what is the best song by ...?

I’m trying to make a best of cd with one song from a whole bunch of different artists. I have eclectic tastes so this cd will have a whole bunch of different songs.

I’ve managed to decide on some, like Stairway to Heaven by Led Zepplin, Dust in the Wind by Kansas, Clocks by Coldplay, Scarbourough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel, Schism by Tool, and City of Angels by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I can’t quite decide what the best song for the Beatles, Nickelback, Pink Floyd or the Rolling Stones is, so I’m asking -

What song do you think is the best by these artists?

Thanks for your help!!:stuck_out_tongue:

Beatles - My Guitar Gently Weeps (Unsure of actual title) or perhaps Because the World is Round (ditto)
Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond
Rolling Stones - Factory Girl

And you got the wrong Led Zeppelin song - it’s The Battle of Evermore

Beatles - Here Comes the Sun
Pink Floyd - Going to California

Beatles: IN
Nickelback: MY
Pink Floyd: HUMBLE
Rolling Stones: OPINION

The best Stones song IMHO is “Stray Cat Blues”. The Stones took rock and roll to new depths of sleaze with this song, and nothing else came close until The New York Dolls a few years later.

I’m not a Beatles fan, far from it, but I really like Revolver, and my favorite song from that would have to be “And Your Bird Can Sing”. In fact, thats one of my favorite songs of all time.

As far as Floyd goes…“Astronomy Domine” gets my vote. I’m kind of biased against the post Ummagumma stuff though.

Jon

I always liked Shine on you Crazy Diamond, so am glad for a vote for that one.

Also love While my Guitar Gently Weeps, but also like ObliDi OblaDa and Maxwell’s Silver Hammer, still thinking on it!

Pink Floyd- Welcome to the Machine
Beatles- Help

I like Shine on you Crazy Diamond a lot, but if he is making a cd, he may not want a 13 minute song on it. What about Comfortably Numb or Have a Cigar or Wish You Were Here.

As for the Rolling Stones I would vote for either Tumbling Dice or Sympathy For the Devil.

And for the Beatles, if not While My Guitar… I would say Something or You Never Gave Me Your Money.

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower (short song)
- Voodoo Chile (epic)

I know he’s not on your list, but based on your other musical interests, he damn well should be!

Floyd–Dogs or Pigs on the Wing.

Do you like Green Day?
Put some Brain Stew on their!

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb, no question about it.
Stones - Paint it black

The Stones: Hot Stuff

Stones - damn, there’s a lot to choose from - how about Gimme Shelter, Wild Horses, King Bee, Satisfaction, Beast of Burden, eh, I’ll be here all night…

Zep’ might also include Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You, The Lemon Song, When the Levee Breaks, gah, I’ll get stuck here, too.

Methinks this is off to CS as soon as Czarcasm ferrets it out.

Good luck!

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil

Also, might I suggest that you consider a different Tool song? I’d go for Lateralus or 46 & 2 personally. Or you could get really out there and go for Tool’s remake of No Quarter (originally by the aformentioned Led Zepplin)

For the Beatles, either “Across the Universe” or “Norwegian Wood.” I would have gone with Zeppelin’s “Tangerine,” myself.

And there are good Nickelback songs? Wonders never cease.

Nickelback- Leader of Men
Beatles- Day Tripper
Stones- Paint it Black
Tool- Jerk-Off

Led Zeppelin choices:
Good Times Bad Times
Black Dog
Heartbreaker
Bring It On Home
Trampled Underfoot

The list goes on, and on…

(These aren’t my personal favorites, but I think these are regarded as pieces from bands at top of their form)

Beatles: Sgt. Pepper (Reprise) / A Day in the Life
Rolling Stones: Honkey Tonk Women
Pink Floyd: Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Pts. 1-5

and I strongly favor
Bridge Over Troubled Water for Simon & Garfunkel

Not that you asked but you may consider
Tangled up in Blue by Bob Dylan

As evidenced by the posts thus far, taste is subjective.

Led Zepplin: Kashmir or The Crunge
Kansas: Carry On Wayward Sun or What’s On My Mind
Simon and Garfunkel: A Simple Desultory Philippic or America
Tool: Ænema or The Patient
Red Hot Chili Peppers Suck My Kiss or Give It Away

====================================================
Beatles: Rain or Within Without You
Nickelback: Never Again or Hangnail
Pink Floyd: Sheep or One Of These Days
Rolling Stones: Stray Cat Blues or Shattered
