I have randomly lurked on the board for a year or so, then finally bucked up and am now a member… Can someone explain what is up with all the cats on here? There is more pussy talk on this board than some porno sites…
I do know the rule of cat = pic, but what is this facination with felines?
Someone please help direct this newb to the answers that we all seek…
I’ve noticed the same thing, but I have no idea what the answer is. (I live with two cats, but they’re my roommates’.) Maybe there’s a correlation between geeky people and cat people?

Cats rule! Duh. 
Yeah, I don’t really get it, either. I love animals - dogs, cats, whatever, but I don’t personify them, share pictures of them, etc.
I would venture that many, if not most, of the folks who do this don’t have kids, and they’re just doing the same sort of things proud parents would do - I reckon it’s in our nature to love something and be all gaga and proud of it. Nothing wrong with that!
Please don’t get me wrong, I am not a cat hater by any means. I was just wondering the connection with dopers and cats…
I post my cat because she is very cute and she makes people go “Squee!” and make goofy words up. I can’t resist a cute cat on the board or IRL, so I will always click on a kitty thread and hunt for pictures. I think that most people fall into that category rather than they are recluses who think that their cat is the cutest most pweciousest thing ever that must be showed to the world.
If I post it, they will click. If they didn’t, I wouldn’t take the time.
I think it just comes down to the fact that there are a lot of animal lovers here. I can’t resist a kitty thread, but I’d be just as happy to swoon over puppies. Kittens & puppies = cuteness, which makes me happy.
And yeah, I can’t resist posting pictures in most of those threads. Everyone thinks that their pets are the cutest and many of us want to show them off. Just like everyone thinks that their kids are the cutest, smartest, etc. As An Arky said, it’s in our nature to be all gaga and proud of something.
In their quest for universal domination, felines often seek out the most highly intelligent of a species. Once they dominate the creme de la creme, the rest of the population will be a snap.
I have to go, kitty demands to be scritched behind the ears.

Can’t find the cite, but somewhere there’s a piece about blogging that says cats are the ideal blogger pet, seeing as they’re so idiosyncratic and usually don’t get out much. YMMV.
Eh, I have a daughter…and I love cats, too. I go to Cute Overload at least once a day, to go squee over the cuteness. I don’t do the same to human babies.
Pictures? Pshaw… some dopers rent rooms to take care of their cat’s emotional needs. But sometimes there is a tipping point.
How many cats is the tipping point from cat lover to crazy cat collector?
Of course the biggest irony is that Cecil Adams hates cats.
Now see, that is the kind of answer that I am looking for. All this pussy play is just a devious way to piss off the Man of All Knowing… The rest of us don’t really care one way or another about cats, but we do it in spite… Kinda like a 2 year old…
Don’t forget that more people in the US and the UK own cats than dogs these days, too, and it seems that most people who have cats have more than one, as well. So there’s millions of cats out there and this board just shows that.
I’m still a dog person (haven’t ever owned a cat and probably never will), and that’s kind of unusual among pet owners these days.
I have kids (love 'em!) and a grandson (love 'im to pieces!), and am still an animal freak. I have cats, dogs, hamsters and fish.
And like Lynn, I have to have my daily dose of Cute Overload. Sometimes I think my head’s gonna explode from all the cute. I go there whenever I need a brain break.
Just get used to it, the Dope is full of cat-loving liberals.
