I discovered a bag of trail mix at a Costco recently. For non U.S. people, that place is like a “super size” store. Giant bags and containers of food, for example. Anyway, this trail mix has a variety of nuts, m&ms (candies), raisins, and is so good! I think coconut would be good in it, too. Hmm. And maybe dried pineapple. So what kind of trail mix do you like, if you like the stuff?
I love trail mix. I prefer it with only nuts, seeds, and raisins, but if it has those teensy chocolate chips I’ll eat those too. Unsalted or lightly salted, though. None of this heavily seasoned stuff.
The only place in town (Omaha) that I can find just the right kind is Wild Oats. It’s a little pricey, but it’s worth it.
My favorite trail mix:
1 lb. Red Rasins
1 lb. Golden Raisins
1 lb. Salted Peanuts
1 lb. Plain M&Ms
1 lb. Peanut M&Ms
Put in mixing bowl and mix.
Makes 5 lbs.
Don’t forget the dried banana chips.
Raisins, walnuts and dried apricots, sometimes a sprinkle of cinnamon.
In NZ it’s known as scroggin. I always mix my own. It goes something like this:
Peanuts and sultanas in approximately equal amounts.
1 block of dark chocolate broken into pieces.
Strips of dried mango
Any three of the following
dried apricots
pieces of dried fig
dates
dried pineapple
dried papaya
May be augmented by addition of dried cranberries, almonds or cashews.
It’s a good mix of fast energy and slow release. And it tastes great.
