I used to be a big fan of bulk bin nuts for my trail mix. But after having watched people sneeze into their hands and then dive into the bulk bins, I’m less enamored.
I’ve been looking for some places to get some less expensive nuts online. My favorites are cashews and walnuts. Those can get expensive, depending on the place.
So I’m looking for a place where I can get some inexpensive nuts and dried fruit. Trail mix would be nice too. It would be great if I could find a place that sold them in less than a lb. increments.
Doing a quick search, I found a few places but know nothing about them.
Has anyone been successful in buying inexpensive and fresh nuts and dried fruit online? Where’s the best place to order?
Traverse Bay sells dried cherries that I like, and which can be purchased in several pound bags (saves a lot over the small packages you get in supermarkets).
Thanks. I don’t have a membership, but this did remind me to look at Instacart again. Membership is not required to get items from Costco through Instacart, but the prices are higher to make up the difference. It’s something I’m considering.
Thanks. I used to eat a lot of those dried Montmorency cherries at one time. I read that they helped with regular sleep. I’ve gotten out of the habit of eating them, but thanks for the source.
I actually do have a Trader Joe’s relatively nearby. I wish they would deliver. They refuse to partner with Instacart. I used to go there weekly. It got to be more of a hassle than it was worth.
I like the idea of shopping online. I like taking the time to pick out the things I want instead of making snap decisions when I’m at the store.
I’ve started eating fewer carbs, but can’t stop snacking. So I’ve been packing mixed nuts and/or trail mix.
I bought some at our supermarket, and even tried the dollar store, but apparently I’m pickier than I thought about the quality. Trader Joe’s is the best quality I’ve found, and is half the price of the bulk bins. They have “single species”, and a great Mixed Nuts blend… and when you deserve a treat, blends with cranberries, cherries, ginger or other goodies.
Nice! Thank you. Their stuff looks so yummy. Do you know if they sell in less than 1 lb. increments? I’m liking the look of their candied walnuts, but a pound sounds like too much for me. Ditto with their maple fudge with walnuts.
I’m having a great time just browsing all the stuff. Fun!
Thanks again for the recommendation.
I used to be tempted by Trader Joe’s trail mix. But whenever I bought a bag, I realized when I got it home that there was one thing in the mix I didn’t like, and I tried several different ones. I’d eat around that one thing, but after a while, I realized it was a waste.
Me too. I have raved on these boards before about the best-dried-fruit-ever Angelino plums from nuts.com.
I think they carry their mad-whimsy style a little too far with their goofy packaging (do you mind not writing all over my shipping box that the contents are a delicious food item, please? so far no box has actually disappeared from my porch, that I know of, but there’s such a thing as not putting temptation needlessly in people’s way). But I’m willing to overlook that for the awesomeness of the product.
I’m guessing that you get these Angelino plums. Those look good.
I can’t do sulfur dioxide. There’s Angelino plums without it, but they don’t look quite as good, although sometimes the look doesn’t determine the taste with dried fruit. I’ve had some dried fruit that looked bad but tasted yummy.

Directions

[li]Preheat oven to 325F[/li][li]Melt butter[/li][li]Mix pecans and butter or oil and maple syrup in large bowl (let rest for a minute or two to let the butter soak in) stir well to evenly coat the nuts.[/li][li]Spread buttered pecans on two cookie sheets and sprinkle with salt[/li][li]Roast in oven for 10-11 minutes. For even roasting, about halfway through, swap cookie sheets left to right and top to bottom.[/li][li]After swapping the cookie sheets, turn off the oven. Residual heat is enough to finish the roasting.[/li][li]Watch pecans closely - they burn easily. Color is key, a nice golden brown the goal. Cooking continues after removing from oven.[/li][li]Remove from oven, salt again if needed and let cool on sheets[/li][/ul]
Store in airtight container or ziploc freezer bag.
I don’t actually order online because I just go to the store, but I can highly recommend Las Vegas’ own The Beef Jerky Store for all your jerky, nut, dried fruit and weird Asian snack food & candy needs. They ship pretty much anywhere. Super nice folks, too.
Ooh, frozen poi! That looks good. I also like the looks of the tofu jerky. I’ve been seeing a lot more non-meat jerkies lately. I haven’t gotten a chance to try many of them lately. Thanks for the source.
btw, thanks again for the recommendation of the Lenny and Larry’s cookies in another thread. Based on that, I’ve been eating Munk Pack cookies as my staple. Just ate a bit of it just now. I’m thinking of moving toward the Lenny and Larry’s because the Munk Pack is now harder to find.
I will vouch for nuts.com; they have a blisteringly fast delivery turnaround time, almost always far faster than when they say you can expect delivery; their snacks and mixes are quite tasty, their nuts are fresh. They have shelled black walnuts nomm nomm nomm. Nice people.
