What literary characters have you fallen in love with?

I second Peter Wimsey. I’ve been intriged ever since I met him.

Friday from Heinleins book of the same name, she really had a certain something.

Hmm and another vote for Susan Sto Helit…

Well I dunno about Anne Rice’s Akasha, but for a while I went out with a girl who used Akasha as a handle, does that count?

Aragorn, of course. The movie just didn’t compare with the man who’s been inhabiting my head since I read the book.

Captain Carrot.

I’ll third (or is it fourth? I’ve lost track) Stu Redman.

Mr. Darcy.

Tarzan.

Maybe this is why I haven’t been able to find a dateable guy… possibly my standards are just a smidge too high.

William Hurt’s voice was sexy in Backshi’s LotR wasn’t it?

Mudge the Otter from Allan Dean Foster’s Spellsinger series.

Duncan Idaho gholas of Frank Herbert’s Dune. The poor long suffering soul!

I think lobley is right…Adoration is more like it.

Yuri Zhivago, even if he WAS a two-timing sleazeball. All’s fair in love and war, you know. Of course, maybe it’s just because I saw the movie before I read the book, and Omar Sharif is such a hottie!

Candace Compson from The Sound and the Fury. I mean, the book was written because Faulkner was in love with her, and the whole story is about making the reader love her, too. You know that you couldn’t keep her, but… Rowr!

I don’t really know why, but I fell in love with Celia from Volpone, too. She just has all the guys wrapped around her finger…

Oh, what the hey, I’ll put in another voice for Susan Sto Helit!

Huh. While I can understand some of these choices (esp. Kinsey Millhone), I guess I don’t usually fall for book characters in that way. What I thought of was my teenage crush on Kitty Pryde from the X-Men & Excalibur (“X-Calibre”) comics. I think serialisation has something to do with it. (Also the case with Kinsey Millhone, of course.)

What struck me was that Chronos mostly named books I’m familiar with from childhood. But I wouldn’t have thought of Susan Calvin from I, Robot or the princess from the Prydain cycle. Of course, I identify with characters of both sexes easily, so I’m not sure whether I ever “fell in love” with those characters, except in a fan-to-concept way. I definitely dug Lucy (Narnia) & Eowyn (LOTR) for obvious reasons, but in love with? Maybe. It’s been a while.

Howard Roark from The Fountainhead and Rochester from Jane Eyre

Roland Deschain from Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series.

LOL, don’t let my friend and fellow SDMB’er Tars Tarkas hear that! I think he’s got dibs on her.

While I’m tempted to pick any of the slavegirls on Gor…really tempted…oh yeah, that’s the stuff…er, as I was saying…well, I lost my train of thought now!
