What made Wonder Woman take off her long pants? In latest JL cover it's sexy times again.

She had pants now she doesn’t.

What happened to de-pants Wonder Woman? Not enough DC fanboy sales?

She never actually had that design in the comics. That was a preliminary design before the relaunch. By the time the actual comics came out she’d been reverted to the design that looked more like her old costume.

I don’t think they’ve ever actually said why they reverted. I suspect it was to distance her from the terrible leaked TV pilot, and the badly received JMS arc (which got much better once he got bored and somebody else took over to finish it) in her previous book, both of which used long-pants designs.

This is what that cover looked like when the book actually went to press.

That second cover you linked, BTW, was originally used the same month, as (one of the) cover(s) of Justice League #1. It’s not new to that collection.

The difference in the look is the fact that Cliff Chang has a much more dynamic style than Jim Lee, not an actual difference in her design.

So far, every redesign I’ve seen, including the many fan suggestions, have vastly improved her awkward swimsuit thing she always wears. It’s a shame that nobody in DC seems to have an ounce of faith in imaginative new ideas.

Fans complained about the pants. They got rid of the pants. Readers are usually the ones most resistant to new ideas in comics.

Huh. Well, I don’t read superhero comics, so that fits.

Non-readers demand change!

Changes in the big name superheroes are short lived. Thank god. After the terrible “modern” long hair Superman, it’s no accident that his image reverted to the ultra-iconic Alex Ross take. The original superheroes will always be rooted in their classic looks, the same way Coke can never fully get away from their classic curvy bottle.

Superman and Batman will be back in their respective red and black strongman trunks before the decade is out - guaranteed. Which is great by me, as that’s my definitive Batman. Everything else is a variant.

Wonder Woman’s look is iconic. Most people could tell you very little about the character herself but she’s instantly recognizable by almost everyone in the United States. You don’t alter an icon too much. Like both Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman’s outfit is based off what circus performers of the era wore. She’s dressed the same way a trapeze artist would have dressed.

Yeah, “superheroes in sensible outfits” just doesn’t quite make it. Besides often it is transparently in order to officialize some sort of outfit that will look better or at least plausible when worn by a live actor.

As it is the classic WW look at least is an outfit that is physically wearable (as demonstrated by Linda Carter). It’s not like she’s in one of those outfits that can only be reprodiced as bodypaint or where any sort of actual movement would result in pieces of oufit and sundry body parts popping out in opposite directions.
And c’mon it’s a tale of a hot Amazon who ties people up with a magic rope (or, of a billionare mental case who dresses up as a bat to fight a bunch of WMD-armed sideshow freaks while traumatizing a succession of teenage sidekicks). Realism was not left behind, it did not buy a ticket.

I am so stealing this.

She couldn’t find anything at Sears to fit that tiny waist and huge ass.

Me, too. That’s one for the ages.

I related news, Marvel just replaced Thor with a woman. If she lasts a year, I’ll be amazed.

I thought you were kidding, so I went to the Marvel site. There I read “The new Thor continues Marvel’s proud tradition of strong female characters like Captain Marvel, Storm, Black Widow and more".

“Strong female characters like Captain Marvel”

Carol Danvers, formerly Ms. Marvel (and formerly Binary) is now calling herself Captain Marvel, which is, presumably, who they’re referring to.

Carol Danvers. aka Ms Marvel, aka Captain Marvel. Marvels like to use the name Captain Marvel once in a while just to fuck over DC, who owns Captain Marvel, who they have to call Shazam! on the cover. The story here is long and full of assholish lawsuits.
DC sued Fawcett, then let the copyright run out, so Marvel grabbed it.

Right, as Thor she might last a year. But somewhere she’ll live on. Marvel characters never die.

:o Thank you very much.

Oh, put her pants back on. Do readers really care that much? Are people writing angry letters to DC demanding she lose her pants?

Iconic look or no, I don’t like the underpants on the outside look, and onesies are better. You can update the basic superhero costume without losing the iconic look. C’mon, hairstyles and things do change.

Also, with the movie version coming out in 2018, people will be firmly entrenched in the “Captain Marvel = Marvel comics” camp. DC’s never getting that back
