We’ve had threads about the movies you always watch whenever you happen to catch them on TV, no matter how many times you’ve seen them and no matter at what point in the film you happen to come along. There are Dopers who’ll be clicking the remote and come across the last 45 minutes of The Blues Brothers and won’t move from their chairs until the last credit*, and there are plenty of other movies represented on the list.
But what movies do your spouses or SOs have remote-lock for that just leave you baffled? Not talking about a movie that he/she’ll say "Oh, look, ____ is on at 9, I really want to watch it, but one that just causes time and space to cease to exist. You may ask “Could we see what else is on, please?” and answer comes there, “No, this is good!”
With my husband, one of them is Home Alone. What the hell is with that movie? I don’t get it. But if he’s clicking the remote and that milk-faced Macaulay Culkin is there, it’s at least another half-hour before a return to sanity. What is it at your house?
I can tel you the reverse first – Pepper mill can’t stand watching Barry Lyndon or The Abyss and certainly doesn’t share my affection for James Bond movies.
there’s no particular movie that she likes that I don’t, although I easy get my fill of her perpetual line of Ace of Cakes, Say Yes to the Dress, and even Antiques Roadshow. I’ll watch “chick flicks”, but often, given my druthers, I’d be elsewhere. So i haven’t seen 27 Dresses or many other entries.
I cannot let Overboard come on and not watch it until the very end. My husband hates that movie and will not watch it.
However, if Big Trouble in Little China or either of the Escape From… (Snake Plissken) movies is on, he is transfixed. I, on the other hand, do not like or understand the appeal of them.
Oddly, let Death Proof or Tombstone come on and we are both glued to the screen.
Not movies so much as certain TV shows. She can’t get enough of all the CSI and Law & Order programs, and will watch every one when they air. She TiVos them, and watches the reruns over and over. I don’t get it at all. Then again, her eyes glaze over completely whenever I watch The Universe.
That’s my wife’s movie as well. I mean, it was “okay” standard fare for a single viewing back in its time but why are people still watching it in 2010?
Not so much my wife but me: I like pretty much anything from Monty Python, and I really love “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”. My wife does not understand this affectation, even when I point out the deeply philosophical musings such as, “Three shall be thy number … not one, not two, but thrrrreeeee!”, “Run awayyyyyyyyyy!!!”, and “She turned me into a newt!”
Personally, I think she’s crazy, but I love her anyway.
