What music are you listening to now?

Which in one way is great, because it also has the whole Tommy-section of the concert, but there’s one disadvantage which favors the 25th anniversary edition: this version already expanded the original album (which is great in its own way, roughness and shortness) by the other non-Tommy songs, but as a great bonus, also included much stage chatter, especially by Pete, which sometimes is hilarious. Unfortunately, the super duper deluxe edition edited that out.

Oh, and what do I listen to right now? I’ve always wanted to check out Rodney Crowell, who I got to be interested in by his work with Emmylou Harris. So now I’m finally hearing his albums “Ain’t Living Long Like This” and “Diamonds And Dirt” in a row. Good stuff, though the latter is a bit too slick for my taste. But hey, it’s from 1988, what other kind of production can you expect?

I’ve had Billy Joel’s album Glass Houses on repeat on Apple Music while driving, for the past 2 days. It’s all because of this post in the “Hard rocking songs by bands that surprised you” thread, which mentioned Close To The Borderline, which I had never heard before. I listened to that song and was amazed to hear a Billy Joel song that sounded nothing like the “dad rock” that I associate him with. It sounded more like Thin Lizzy or T-Rex.

I liked that song so much I played the whole album on Apple Music, and liked that album so much that I just kept it playing. It’s an intriguing album that contains several tracks that sound almost exactly like Elvis Costello, like I Don’t Want To Be Alone Anymore, and Sleeping with the Television On. One song called All For Leyna that sounds like Joel’s more famous song Movin’ Out but in a minor key and with a narrator who sounds like an obsessed stalker; one song called Don’t Ask Me Why which sounds like Wings-era Paul McCartney; and the best known songs from the album are probably You May Be Right and It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me. Those two songs I have already heard a million times, so I just skip over them.

This album definitely caused me to re-evaluate my impression of Billy Joel.

Speaking of live Who, I’ve been listening to/watching their “unplugged” shows from the Pryzm nightclub earlier this week. It’s so great to see Pete and Rog in a laid-back setting–warts and all–in front of a small crowd. If you’re a fan of Pete’s stage banter, these are really fun to watch. Highly Suspect’s “Serotonia”. Awesome song, awesome rock band.

Sepultura just released one of the greatest metal albums of all time. I know, a bold statement. I do NOT say that very often. I think the last time they had an excellent album was 1996(Roots).

If you have not listened to Sepultura in 20+ years or even ever, you should check out their latest album. Sometimes, a band or artist that has been consistently releasing OK or merely adequate albums…just clicks and puts out a masterpiece.

I believe this will end up in my top 5 metal albums of all time.

Currently in love with Skating Polly - right now, I’m listening to Louder In Outer Space.

Tomorrow is Mardi Gras so I’m listening to some New Orleans Jazz instead of my usual. Current track is “When It’s Sleepy Time Down South” by The Red Onion Jazz Band.

'Course, Mardi Gras needs some second line music so I have a few tracks off this CD as well.
