No kidding. I spent most of the fifth season (as well as the end of the fourth and the beginning of the sixth!) wanting smack Rory around, and that urge has not entirely abated. She really is a wretched little ingrate. Watch the reruns. Even seasons 1 - 3 “sweet and perfect” Rory is noticeably missing an important phrase from her vocabulary. That phrase is “Thank you.” She says it far too seldom, and with far too little feeling behind it on the rare occasions she bothers. *Everyone * in her life has constantly told her how very special and wonderful she is, shielded her from her mistakes, and gone way the hell above and beyond to make sure that she never wanted for anything or felt less than cherished for a moment, and it’s biting them all in the ass now.
I don’t argue with her saving the paper during Paris’ meltdown. But she was manipulative about it (though maybe she didn’t realzie she was being manipulative) and she should have IMMEDIATELY told Paris she was going to take the job, not taken even half a chance of someone else telling her. Even better–more respectful of the fact that Paris considers Rory her best friend–would have been not taking it. She’s got at least another year at Yale, possibly two considering her dropping out; she has time to be editor.
But I find her current treatment of her grandparents odious, yes.
Stepsister, actually. I know; sometimes it’s hard to remember that Rory and Lorelai are different generations.
I like Rory with Logan. I like the dynamic. His banter with Rory is not that different fro her old banter with Lorelai. But I think the writers were being disingenuous by introducing the bridesmaids plot. I honestly don’t think Logan would have done that to Rory.
I agree that Rory’s character is getting less and less likeable. She definitely shouldn’t have gone to Anna’s store. Rory is going to have to meet Anna someday, and this will only make things harder. Besides, Luke may have an obligation to involve Lorelai with April to a greater degree, but Rory is certainly not entitled to be involved without an express invitation.
I do think that Lorelai is trepidatious about Luke’s boundaries, but she should tak to him about how the whole situation is making her feel cut off. Married couples share more than this. They need to be moving into that mode.
:smack:
I almost missed it, too. WB originally had it scheduled for 4/11, but bumped it up to 4/4 for some reason.
Quick comment about Zach & Lane not sleeping together- a couple seasons back when it was getting hot between them, Lane realized that of all the religious upbringing she was rebelling against, the one thing that stuck was no premarital sex. She was horrified that she couldn’t get past it but there it is. And Mrs Kim says Ha!
Btw, the writers really don’t seem to have a clue about 7th Day Adventism- there’ll be an accurate comment about their avoiding meat or spicy foods, and then there’ll be a reference to the Stations of the Cross?!?!?
I don’t recall any references to Stations of the Cross; can you be more specific?
One thing to bear in mind about Stars Hollow, though, is that, though there are several congregations, there’s only one church building–or, at least, fewer buildings than congregations. We’ve seen that the 7th-Day folks share the building with the Jewish folk; we’ve seen the Adventist pastor waiting impatiently for the rabbi to be done, or perhaps it was the other way around. The feeling I got from that episode was that there’s a third (and possibly a fourth) group using the same building on Sunday.
The Congregationalists, the Catholics and the Episcopalians have gotta meet somewhere you know! One of the funniest Stars Hollow things had to do with the church bells. Remember when Luke and Lorelei went in the church to break the bells? The Reverend catches them and says, “Oh, Thank God!”
What? Every word out of Emily’s mouth is a joke! (Yes I know this point has been made upthread, but I’m going somewher with this.) One of the continuing developments of this show is that Emily, Lorelai and Rory are all basically the same person, but in different contexts. That’s why I loved Rory’s “reconciliation” with Logan this ep. Her behavior with Logan is exactly the same thing her mother’s been doing with Luke – pretending the boyfriend’s inexcusable conduct isn’t a big deal ant that the relationship is hunky-dory when it’s actually hanging by a thread. Fab, I don’t think Lorelai’s anger at Rory’s visit to Anna’s shop is because she respsects Luke’s boundaries. (And really, fuck him, y’know? He’s being a complete dweeb with his sidelining of her in favor of April instead of even allowing them to meet, especially since it’s obviouls that April would get on famously with both the Lorelais). Anyway, boundaries, shmoundaries. Lorelai didn’t want Rory over there because she knows that relationship with Luke is on a precipice and though he has no right to keep April from Lorelai, he’s too pigheaded to realize that, so Lorelai’s strategy has been to do nothing to possibly rock the boat. When she should be telling Luke that he’s an insensitive ass and he’d better pay some attention to the state or Lorelai’s feelings if he doesn’t want to lose her.

Finally procured a tape of the episode last night (My vcr conked out on me).
I firmly believe that at the time the writers were writing last week’s and this week’s episodes… the actor who plays Logan was in contract negotiations for next season.
“Oh he signed on? Guess we better get Rory and Logan back together.”
The characters are acting off because… characters change… they evolve, devolve, their experiences actually matter on the show.
Rory’s whole story arc for the last two seasons (and arguably before that) has been her exploration of Rich White Privliege.
I think it will be interesting when Lor’ does meet Anna. Since Anna and Lorelai appear so similar, that’s going to mess with Lorelai’s security.
