What percentage of porn marketed towarded heterosexual men is misogynistic?

In the gay porn I’ve watched, I haven’t seen a lot of face slapping, ejaculating onto the face, gagging, or anything that I see far too much in straight porn, unless the gay film was marketed towards BDSM lovers. I’ve seen straight films where it was pretty obvious that the woman was faking or wasn’t enjoying it, but in the gay porn I’ve seen where there was any possibility that one partner wasn’t enjoying it, it was always set up that way so I knew what I was getting into before I clicked the link (ie, BDSM, straight guys being done for the first time, etc).

Part of the reason I prefer gay porn to straight porn even though I’m a straight women is because the gay porn I’ve come across seems to generally be more about mutual pleasure and satisfaction. While there are still general physical attribute categories (twinks, 9 inch, etc), they aren’t hyped up as much as the women’s bodies are in straight porn. What’s more, both males in gay porn are usually objectified, where as, in straight porn marketed to men, it’s always the woman who’s made into an object (at least, I’ve never seen any where it was different).

In short, straight porn made for men seems to be more about men doing things to women, while gay porn is more about blokes doing things with each other. Obviously, not all straight porn is like this and I’ve seen websites and videos that I enjoy that didn’t contain these elements, but far too much of it does. I’d say at least 75% of the professional stuff. The closest thing to misandry that I’ve seen in gay porn would be something like ‘straight hell’ or one of those sites where they are rough with supposedly straight guys. I think it’s more like desiring a revenge for homophobia than misandry.

I wish you’d left me a little more wiggle room. Before I saw the poll I was thinking about 75%. So choosing an option that goes up to 99% doesn’t sit too well with me, but it’s what I had to choose.

I think it’s the gagging and slapping I find most misogynistic. I don’t think a lot of it is planned, or marketed, that way. It’s just that the male actors are such assholes (or think their viewing audience are the assholes that want to see that).

I voted less than 5%.

My reason is that most of the slapping/bitch-calling/power games are just that; games. If I call my girlfriend a bitch or slut when we’re having sex am I a misogynist? Do I hate my girlfriend? Do I hate women? No. Actually it turns her on, and that’s the only reason for saying it, as it doesn’t really do anything for me.

Different desires and motivations control us during sex, we are quite literally different people when we copulate. Many women (and men) like to be submissive, and have no problem being “mistreated”. This is important to remember when we are judging sexual behaviour, we cannot apply standards from other social sitations. Different rules apply. If a woman is being slapped and called names during sex, this might be misogynistic (ie the man doing it might actually hate women); on the other hand, it might be the only thing that makes her orgasm.

If the poll had been “what % of porn showed women being degraded”, I would be voting 95%. Degradation of women and hatred of women are two entirely different things however. The latter is always bad, while the former can be good or bad depending on the situation.

I voted. I believe 68 to 99 percent porn is misogynistic towards woman. That’s why I like lesbian porn. It’s all gentle and sweet.

This. Though I’d add to it what I find most misogynistic about pornography isn’t actually the slapping, role playing, or whatever- it’s the greater sexual implications of what’s being portrayed for women. Men learn that a woman can cum like a fountain with 20 seconds of rabbit pumping (or that all most women need is plain vaginal intercourse), men think all women can just have something go vag to ass with no discomfort and love it, etc. You’ve got whole generations of men growing up and learning some backwards shit about the female body and THAT is hateful toward women, I think.

That said, I guess a guy fingering a girl for 10- 20 minutes really doesn’t make for good pornography, so I wont hold it against them too strongly.

Other: It depends who you ask. I’m sure there’s some people on a board somewhere that rhymes with Estee Emby would take offense to anything involving a woman. Ever. To them, I’m sure 800485723478529524986% of porn is misogynistic, and I’m also misogynistic for participating in this thread, and everyone who’s ever even stood in the same continent as porn is misogynistic.

I voted “somewhere between 68-99”, although I’m at the, say, 70% end of that. I think the treatment of women in a lot of the porn I’ve seen bits of is just vile. The worst are those so-called gonzo types, like the dude on a boat in Miami (Stabbin?), or the guy (Mike?) who goes to Brazil. They all treat the women like shit. It may be an act, but so what? It’s the message it sends that’s important. And those type of sites (your Mikes, your Dogfarts) are pretty large part of the online market. European porn, which IMO used to be great in the 80s, has also gone downhill, probably with the spread of cheap talent from the East and every star wanting to emulate those über-douches, Rocco Siffredi and Pierre Woodman. Don’t get me started on the Russian “teen” stuff. Everything I’ve glanced at looks like barely-legal date rape.

Nowadays, if I were looking for porn, I’d stick to softcore/skinemax stuff, amateur stuff or well-written couples stuff with good production values and less gagging, slapping and rough anal.

What kimera said.

Straight female here, and I’ve watched a lot of porn just looking for some that includes: A man giving a shit if the female he’s fucking is enjoying herself and who also gives a shit if what he’s doing to her feels good for her.

So I tend to prefer gay porn as well, because at least the lesbians care if they are making the other person feel pleasure.

I got really tired of seeing all the fake female orgasms in traditional straight porn. I don’t think I’ve ever once seen a real female orgasm when watching straight porn. Now, in San Francisco Lesbians 6? Whoooooa yeah. Those chicks know how to get each other off.

That and I don’t want whatever man I’m with to get any funny ideas that would require several months of intensive gymnastics training for me to pull off. So he can get off. Nevermind what works for me; I’m *just *a woman.

As opposed to the men, who are valued for their life accomplishments and strong senses of ethics? Not to pick on you, Cat Fight, but those of you who complain that women in porn are reduced to their body parts, notice what the men are reduced to.

I picked a fairly low percentage, but then again I’m pretty selective about what I watch. If I don’t get the sense that the woman (or women) is having a good time, I look for something else. And I get absolutely bored with endless jackhammer pounding. I guess that’s why I tend to like amateur stuff.

At least you’re not bitter.

I’m with ya’, tdn. I’m all rah rah feminism as much as the next modern chick who enjoys equal voting rights and equal pay, but c’mon- the men in porn are reduced to . . . ah yes, giant cocks. That’s all. That’s because it is a purely visual, purely sexual thing, so of course the people are being reduced to their visual, sexual attributes-- that’s the freaking point.

I’m genuinely surprised that so many folks here feel such a high percentage of pornography is misogynistic.

I actually get irritated if they show the guy’s face too much.

Exactly. And it goes further than that. Even if we’re objectifying the woman, we’re at least objectifying the whole woman. We care about her face, hair, boobs, stomach, butt, vulva, legs, and feet. But in porn, there are only three parts to a man*. And I’ve seen a good amount of porn in which the woman is intereviewed a little before the action starts. What’s her name? How old is she? Where is she from? What’s her favorite position?

I have yet to hear a male porn actor interviewed like this. Why? Because no one cares!

Not that I’m going on any great crusade for men’s rights in porn. But if one is going to complain how porn objectifies women, look what it does to men.

*Come on, you didn’t forget about the testicles, did you?

Me too. I actually stop wanking until they pan back to the girl. Maybe I think I’ll catch the gay or something.

But that’s because the men who are the intended audience for that kind of porn don’t want to watch somebody else have sex with the woman. They want to be having the sex, if only vicariously.

Actually, despite my bitterness, you’ve underscored my point.

Who cares?

I do! I’m watching the porn for the men! I’m a straight chick. I could give a flying rat’s ass about which is the actress’s favorite position. I could give a flying fuck about watching two chicks go down on each other. Tell me about the guy. What does he want to do to the girl? What does he want her to do to him? What has he never done on camera and is secretly afraid to try? Let’s see him do that!

My point was: there is very little in straight porn for women. It’s all targeted toward what men find titillating. You have to go to lesbian porn to find things that women dig.

The reason why you don’t hear about what the guy wants from a girl is because he’s gay. That’s why he can hammer all day without cumming; in his mind, he might as well be fucking a piece of liver.

I think that that’s probably BS, but I’m not sure. I thought I’d seen a thread about it a long time ago. Maybe it should be a new GQ thread?
