There are a few game recommendation threads for smartphones/tablets (here, here, and here) but they’re all at least a year old. I already know what are the most popular and critically praised. But sometimes, I download a game just to check it out and get hooked for a few weeks. Currently, I’m splitting my time between Quiz RPG: World of Mystic Wiz and Marvel’s Puzzle Quest Dark Reign.
Quiz RPG is for trivia buffs. You receive categories of quiz questions and if you answer correctly, your party of characters attack successfully. A cool mix of trivia and RPG.
Does anyone remember Puzzle Quest from a few years ago? (I still play the original every couple of years) There’s a new version out involving Marvel characters and team attacks. Lots of fun playing match-3.
Unfortunately, both games suffer from freemium models. Free to download but to get the cool characters and level them up (amongst many other game mechanics) costs in game currency which is doled out in extremely small bits…unless you pay real money to buy a lot. I’m not technically averse to freemium, but I’d rather have an option to pay $15 bucks and get all the content in a logical way such as the first Puzzle Quest game. Marvel’s Puzzle Quest actually has an option to spend $99 for a crazy amount of currency. $99! All for the opportunity to randomly get the best characters. It’s not guaranteed. Random. I can’t even fathom it.
Speaking of freemium, Plants vs. Zombies 2 is now out for Android (after being out for Apple for a few months  )
I’ve been playing this game The Devil’s Attorney the last few days (link is to a review for the iOS version, but it’s also available on Android). It’s two or three bucks, but I picked it up this previous weekend when it was free temporarily.
It’s a courtroom based game (but completely unlike Phoenix Wright), set in the 1980s. Some interesting game mechanics, and individual cases can be played in a few minutes, so it makes a nice “I have a couple of minutes to kill here” game.
As you start each case, there’s a scripted conversation with the prosecuting attorney (there are a number of different ones), which are usually pretty funny, and develop minor story lines outside of the cases. The voice acting is quite good.
Like I said, I got the game when it was free for a few days, but I really wouldn’t have regretted spending a couple of bucks on it.
Bloons Tower Defense 5 and Ravensword 2, at least before opening this thread (I thought my Puzzle Quest addiction was over!). Both acquired via a Humble Bundle. Great deals, those are.
I’ve been playing a game called The Tribez, available for IOS and Android platforms (and as of a few months ago, as a Facebook game). Free to download, solvable without spending any cash (took me about four months), but plenty of opportunity to spend money if you’re impatient (or just not as cheap as I am).
I’ve been playing Adera for Windows on my Surface. It’s like Myst, I guess, very casual play with some interesting puzzles. Mostly just play it to keep myself occupied for a while
Personally I like the kairosoft games (well, some of them - the free ones tend to be a bit poo for some reason) currently working my way through ‘ninja village’ and loving it
