Oh, I don’t think this requirement’s too hard to figure out. Most people looking for someone sweet, innocent and from (their warped, teenage perception of) the 1950s wants someone who’ll damage their ego with witty barbs and scholastic achievement.

The official line, yes. But there are a lot of more liberal elements within the Church, and as has been observed, the Jesuits are notoriously pretty liberal. You may want to do some reading on liberation theology, for example.
