You mean Fizzies? (the link is for Amazon, they have a website of their own too)
Flat discs of dry pita-like bread filled with ersatz tomato sauce and Mozzarella-like substance. They were heated in the toaster, and unbelievably addictive. They also had the power to burn the roof of your mouth down to the bone and simultaneously remain frozen in the middle. Ah, good times!
Also, a product called Chocolate Frosted, that my mom would alternate with yoo Hoo for lunchtime beverages. It was shaken and had a thickish consistency that vaguely tasted of chocolate and malt…
Thing is, I think the allure of these two items is not in the actual taste, but just their unavailability…oh wait… Thomas’ Protogen bread… That’s gone from NY at least and I say good riddance!! It was forced on me by my weight conscious mother throughout my childhood. Anyone remember it?
Thomas’ English muffins used to make a cheddar cheese version-they were great-sadly, no longer made.
Hershey’s “Whoppers” Chocolate Malted Syrup
Pilot Execugel pens. They were a nice looking gel ink pen, and I loved the ink. http://www.pilotpen.com.mx/productos/images/execuGel.jpg You can get the same ink in other pens, but the pens aren’t as cool. Really wanted the red and yellow ones, but too late.
BAMA individual pecan pies. I loved them as a kid. When I made my own money and could buy them for myself, POOF, gone.
Guy’s party mix, they still make it, you gotta order a case online. Small bags made for vending machines.
Seems to me, Sam’s club sells too much of anything, it gets discontinued, changed, reformulated, re-branded, or just plain disappears into thin air.
Since this thread got bumped, I have an update to my own post. When we were in Long Island, one night I ran into a store to get some Diet Coke and double check for some snacks. What did I find but FOUR bags of Wise Crunchy Cheez Doodles! They were basically crammed into the rest of the chips stuff–I think left over from some promotion. (The packaging says “Proud Mets sponsor” but leaves off the awesome ‘double fried’.)
I was in heaven! Sadly, they didn’t live up to the memory.
Oh, we’ve eaten three of the bags and are intentionally saving the fourth for the next time that were in a more munchy state, but it was sad.
Some times, you can’t go home again. <sobbing>
My favorite Cacique bra was the foam cup underwire strapless. I hate straps and that baby kept the girls right up where they needed to be. Best strapless bra ever made. Wide band with FOUR hooks for closure.
Of COURSE they discontinued this model. When I found out, I went around to the Lane Bryant stores (before they closed most of those, too!) and bought up all of them that the stores still had. I think I got four. Two of them are still in the bag waiting for when the ones in use give up the ghost all together.
Soma has a sort-of-okay strapless bra, but it only has a three-hook closure. For a strapless bra to stay up, it needs a wide band with a certain amount fabric to cling to your torso-- hel-LO! It’s a matter of engineering working against gravity.
<Sigh>
A recent one for me is microwaveable single pizza slices. Sure, you can get a mini pizza for one, but I want a singe, normal size slice, dammit.
Another pizza product I chase after like it’s Lucy with a football is Dr. Oetker Ristorante frozen pizza - Speciale flavor. I don’t want your stinkin’ pizza pollo; get away from with your godforsaken spinaci strain. Every time I go shopping I approach the pizza section hoping to see amore mio and am disappointed every time.
And what the heck happened to peanut butter Twix? It seems to me most industries are getting hip to the fact that peanut butt is a wildly popular flavor and pb Twix have been MIA for a few years now.
Quaker made these granola packs you added milk to. I found them quite tasty and enjoyed them.
Target stopped carrying them and I found them at Publix. But now Publix doesn’t carry them.
I guess I have to brave the frontier that is Wal-Mart. Shudder.
Speaking of the Wal-Mart <Shudder> (I think that should be their new legal name) why oh why must they be the only store to carry Progresso soup in the reduced fat chicken gumbo variety? The one place that you don’t necessarily expect to find accomodating diet conscious folks
Frozen brussel sprouts in cheese sauce. I think Green Giant made it.
Howard Johnson’s frozen macaroni and cheese. I loved that stuff.
So many years of falling in love with a product, only to have it abandon me after a brief fling…
At my…err…advanced age, I think the list is too long to mention, but over the years, if I’ve liked a fragrance, they’ve either immediately pulled it or reformulated it beyond recognition. Hair products, too. Good shampoos and conditioners - gone forever when it’s time to purchase the next bottle. The one and only hair barrette that would not only accommodate my fine, but thick, hair, but would hold it all day…you guessed it - poof, gone.
I’ll echo the poster above regarding Mentadent. Best toothpaste ever and now gone. Thank God for Big Lots. I bought all they got in when it was discontinued.
I’m not much of a snacker, but why on why did you take away my Planter’s Cheez Balls and Sunshine Hydrox cookies?
And muscle cars. Just about the time I was old enough to drive, they disappeared, too.
Heinz Sandwich Spread. It was only sold in Canada and Britain. It became harder to find in the last few years, but up until last year I could still find it in certain stores, then it became available only occasionally. I found some on the shelves about Christmas and foolishly only bought a couple of bottles. Haven’t seen it since and Heinz told me it is no longer being produced. I can get the British version (at about double the price) at a local import store, but it’s not the same recipe - chunkier with a lot of carrot. One of my long-time favourites gone forever :(.
We also suffer from being a popular test marketing area. I can’t count the number of times we have discovered a new product, loved it, and bought it regularly for a while, only to have it disappear and never be seen again. I think we’ve only seen a couple of items reappear as a regularly stocked product after a year or two of unavailability.
I will second the Planter’s Cheez balls, other balls just aren’t the same. Wise makes them, and they’re not nearly as good.
Changing the thread a bit-what about products that NOBODY buys? yet, they appear on shelves for years. Durkee’s “Famous Sauce”-I saw that stuff for years-don’t know anyone who actually buys it.
Apparently, Wal-Mart (shudder) carries it.
I try not to traffic with the Mart of Wal, but for this noble purpose, I may have to make the sacrifice.
Thank you, ivylass, for your most-welcome tip!
