What they don't tell you about vasectomies (TMI)

I had the single incision V (although he did use a scalpel to make the single incision), and the shaving was minimal. Doc took hold of the scrotum, stretched it out a little, and did a couple of swipes with a dry safety razor on the front. 30 sec tops. It was not shaved smooth to the skin, just trimmed down so the hairs were like 1/8" long. No itchy regrowth as from a smooth shave.

For me it was no worse than getting a filling.

I found this interesting web page.

The “no scalpel” method seems to be the standard now. There is a third choice called the Vasclip®. They still cut open your sac but they put a little clip on your vas instead of cutting it. Does anyone have any experience with that?

Also, does insurance generally cover this and what do they cost?

My doctor used those clips, but he also did cut each vas. A clip goes on one loose end, and the other end was sutred, I believe.

I would do the operation again. Like most everyone says, the only real pain is getting the local shot in the sack. Then, it was more of an uncomfortable tugging and pressure sensation, but it was over with quick.

My doctor and his nurse made things easier with a great bedside manner.

My insurance did not cover the procedure, and it cost $700.

This is something different:

Thanks for the other information though. $700 seems like a bargain.

Ours covered 100%, not even a co-pay. YMMV

This was my experience exactly. But have it done on a Friday so you can sit around doing nothing all weekend. The only people I know who had problems afterwards were those who overdid it during the next couple of days. Sit around on a recliner with a bag of frozen peas/whatever on your crotch for a few days and you’ll be fine.

As I already [post=6154257]described it here[/post] there’s no need to repeat myself…

Yes, my doc also used tape to keep my ‘John-Thomas’ out of the way but he did not instruct me to either shave myself (he did it with about 2 swipes of a dry razor, after moistening the area with a warm wash cloth) nor did he mention my having to clear the old sperm out of the way. (Undoubtably Mrs. Stone and I did in one way or another during those 6 weeks, but it was not specifically under doctors orders and we made sure to use a condom.)

PS Through peas away, when they defrost.
