What was the first thing you ever ordered from Amazon?

February 5, 2002: The Simpsons - The Complete First Season

Weezer’s Maladroit. One of my favorite albums of all time.

I still remember being impressed by how quickly it arrived.

Ethics in Psychology: Professional Standards and Cases. Sheer pleasure from cover to cover.

Oct 7, 1999. Hubby and I ordered:

Manifestoes of Surrealism
Regular Polytopes
Allegro Non Troppo
Two Guys Fooling Around With the Moon
Channel’s Destiny
Timequake
Afterage

In August 2003: a CD of Palestrina’s Missa Ave Regina Caelorum

Order Date: September 10, 1998

Items:

* 1 of: Brain Lock : Free Yourself from Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior : A Four-Step Self-Treatment Method to Change Your Brain Chemistry
  Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

Didn’t work. Not really the big problem I’ve since found out. Whatever. But cool to look back, nonetheless.

Sassy, Single and Satisfied: Secrets to Loving the Life You’re Living

I never finished it.

“Douglas Adams’s Starship Titanic”, March 1998

Apparently the first time I used Amazon was to order a birthday gift for Mom.

September 2002: Kindred the Embraced - The Complete series.

I can’t believe that my first order was that recent, though. I was using ebay by 1999.

The first thing I ordered was several things…

Items:

* 1 of: Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (20th anniversary edition with a new preface by the author)

* 1 of: Stop Thinking and Start Living

* 1 of: The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat

* 1 of: Introducing NLP Neuro-Linguistic Programming

* 1 of: Logitech Pilot Wheel Mouse Optical

Number 1 on that list. I still haven’t finished reading. It’s a big and complex book. I think number 2 on that list must have been rubbish because I don’t remember it.
And I still know next to nothing about NLP.

11/1/2001: Axe Victim

On my birthday in 1998 (I think I received a gift certificate):

Items:

* 1 of: The Halloween Man
  Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
* 1 of: Where the Heart Is
  Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
* 1 of: Midwives: A Novel
  Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
* 1 of: The Gift of Fear : Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence
  Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

It was a little sad, though, looking back and seeing toys I had ordered for my girls’ Christmas gifts. Playskool and Fisher Price stuff - now they’re pretty much just into electronics. Sometimes I miss the baby/toddler years. :frowning:

Big Star, #1 Record/Radio City

Toy Matinee in DTS Surround Sound

1999
1 of: The Straight Dope Tells All (Ha! What do I win?)
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
1 of: Away Games : The Life and Times of a Latin Ball Player (Biography of Miguel Tejada - then playing for the Oakland A’s - great story.)
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
1 of: The Dreyfus Affair : A Love Story (I have NO recollection of this book.)

February 3, 2000

Minnie and Moo Go to Paris

Maisy at the Farm

(for my daughter, not quite 3 at the time)

The Day I Swapped My Dad for 2 Goldfish (for my son, then 6)

The Tick : Mighty Blue Justice! (for Mama Zappa)

Mama Zappa was Amazoning for a couple of years at that point, but this was my first foray. The books were on my desk within 48 hours!!

According to Amazon’s website it was a copy of the Illiad on June 10, 1999.

I’m not sure that’s correct. I’m fairly certain it would have been back in 1998. I probably used a different logon that’ i’ve long forgotten.

The Art of Spirited Away - a Christmas present for my sister.

It doesn’t go back far enough to show the first thing I bought. The earliest thing I bought still listed was Beginning Visual Basic 6 in 1998. Then I didn’t buy anything in 1999, bought a shitload in 2000, and have bought very little since.

Season 2 of Buffy, in September of 2004. I’d just gone away to school, gotten a credit card, and was free to indulge my vampiric habits without my parent’s scorn.
