What was the first thing you ever ordered from Amazon?

Add me to the growing list of people who lost their Amazon virginity by buying Straight Dope books. Here’s my first order, from June 2001

* 1 of: More of the Straight Dope
* 1 of: More Anguished English/an Expose of Embarrassing Excruciating, and Egregious Errors in English
* 1 of: Return of the Straight Dope
* 1 of: Icelandic : Grammar, Texts, Glossary
* 1 of: The Straight Dope Tells All

Something must have changed on my account somewhere between my first orders and my current account settings, because it doesn’t have my very first order from them back in… must have been around 1996.

3/15/04:
1 of: The Incredible Machine: Even More Contraptions [CD-ROM]
1 of: The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary by Merriam-Webster

It’s messed up though. This was the earliest one listed but I KNOW I made purchases way before this one. Earliest purchase it has for me was 2003. Then it has me down for ZERO orders from 2004-2007.

Book - The Official Slacker Handbook, on January 12, 2000
2000 is as far back as it will let me go

May 3, '99: Richard Bachman - The Regulators

June 21, '99 - Shirley Jackson - The Haunting of Hill House

Then nothing until December 2007!

It doesn’t go back far enough. This is the first entry it gives:

1 of: Object-Oriented Programming With C++ and Smalltalk

Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

1 of: Donnerjack

Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

1 of: On to Smalltalk

But I know I ordered many many other things from them before that.

June '00:
1 of: Stop Making Sense: Special New Edition (1984 Film) [EXTRA TRACKS][SOUNDTRACK]
1 of: Sonia Dada
1 of: Business As Usual
1 of: Cinnamon Girl [CD-SINGLE]
1 of: Bloody Kisses

Back in 1999 (just after I moved to the US):

1 of: Wisconsin Atlas and Gazetteer

1 of: Kentucky Atlas and Gazetteer

1 of: West Virginia Atlas & Gazetteer

1 of: Indiana Atlas & Gazetteer

(And I still use them when I take car trips driving around the neighbouring states)

Max Payne, August of 2001. I’m pretty sure that was just to get the uncut original version… So, my first amazon purchase was motivated by my thirst for blood.

Wow, looking through those orders is a weird way of going through one’s history… :frowning:

Three books:
* 1 of: Eric
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
* 1 of: Pyramids
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
* 1 of: The Art of War (Shambhala Pocket Classics)
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

Sept. 2000
The first season of the Sopranos on dvd.

December 9, 1998:
* 1 of: The Day the Universe Changed/Audio Cassettes
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC
* 1 of: Connections/Audio Cassette
Sold by: Amazon.com, LLC

It was probably to listen to in the car while we were traveling over the holidays.

Well, when I ordered back in '98, it wasn’t on my current account. It was with my parents. I do remember I ordered the book “The Exorcist” and still have my copy. But I’m not sure if I also ordered any CDs, which I might have.

Otay.

In July 2003 I got my first Red MOMO Force steering wheel, used for my various racing sims. I got a replacement 2 years ago and have kept the original for parts (if I ever need them, which so far I haven’t).

A graphic novel called Enigma. It was the first comic series I’d ever read as a kid, and I wanted to have the whole thing in a book.

I bought the CD of Woodstock!

Huh, my memory was accurate: Country and Blues Harmonica for the Musically Hopeless, book with cassette and harmonica. Ordered in November, 1997.

Interestingly, I remember this order because it arrived without the harmonica. I called their customer service number, spoke to an actual human being, received apologies, and swapped it for a copy with the harmonica attached. Oh, back in the days of excellent customer service…

Evidently a Robotech book. Ashamed? A little.

And then the Complete Romances of Chretien de Troyes.

October 1998:
The Reduced Shakespeare Company’s The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged).

It was one of my first online purchases, period.
