Varoius Artists - Firestarter
Therion - Vovin
NP: Sepultura - Chaos A.D.
Three in one day, actually.
Two from Amazon:
Rilo Kiley - Takeoffs and Landings
A brilliant new group, not well-known, but with some amazing songwriting.
The Clientele - Suburban Light
A total flyer. I read some reviews that compared it to the Velvet Underground channeling Jeff Buckley, and I couldn’t resist. I’ll let you know.
And from a local record store
Rufus Wainwright
His self-titled debut, bought to replace the one that I loaned out a year ago. It’s never coming back. Not that I could blame anyone for stealing this album; it’s astonishing.
Today’s music scene is incredibly good; better than ever before in my life. And I’m 37.
I’m well into old-fartdom, and I don’t care.
Looking at the CDs in my office (my most recent buys):
Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 2
Columbia Country Classics, Volumes 1-4
Willie Nelson - The Great Divide
The Music of Henry Mancini
Roy Orbison - For the Lonely (18 Greatest Hits)
Ella Fitzgerald - The Best of the Song Books
Rosemary Clooney - 16 Biggest Hits
Funk Classics of the 80s
The newest of the new: Time-Life’s Treasury of Bluegrass.
It was an odd one I just had to hear after hearing his cover of Kraftwerk’s “Showroom Dummies”…
Senor Coconut “El Baile Aleman”
Santiago’s fun-loving Latin Playboy, Senor Coconut
This is an album of Kraftwork covers in Cha-Cha-Cha, Merengue, & Cumbia styles.
It might be tricky to find. On the back it says “File under: Simulation”
Queen - The Game
Lordy I feel outta the loop!
My last album purchase was probably something by Rush, and my last cd was Green Day something-or-other, bought at least two years ago.
BTW, I’m saving all my pennies for the NEW Rush CD!
I most recently bought Urban Spaceman by The Bonzo Dog Band. I already had the LP, but I’m getting my collection updated on CD so I can listen more easily.
Since I have only just gotten used to the idea of not being a grad student anymore, and am still getting used to this newfangled idea of “money,” I’m still in the phase of buying all those CDs I couldn’t afford to buy in previous years.
So, the last spending spree resulted in:
Wilco, Being There
Portishead, Dummy
The Stone Roses, s/t
Supergrass, I Should Coco
Jellyfish, Spilt Milk
Velvet Crush, In the Presence of Greatness
Teenage Fanclub and Jad Fair, Words of Wisdom and Hope (warning: do not buy this album! Yech!)
Ivy, Apartment Life
I went to the Metalfest in New Jersey this past weekend. I saw all sorts of bands, most of them I didn’t know. I also just saw the In Flames and Iced Earth tour, very good.
Riding with the King – BB King and Eric Clapton
a best of The Kinks CD
Bob Marley
Nickelback
Led Zepplin - Four
I am 35.
*Far Side of the World[/] - Jimmy Buffett
Not dope-smoking. Not beer-drinking. A red-wine kinda album.
Natalie Merchant, Motherland. Almost bought something by Dar Williams at a flea market last weekend, but the disc had a big scratch.
Yea! Hawkwind is my all-time favorite band! I don’t often run across folks who’ve even heard of them.
I’ve just replaced two album’s I’d somehow lost: The Man Who by Travis and Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette.
Well, I am an old fart (38) who actually likes the new stuff on the radio. Last week I got both Tantric and Godsmack.
Wow, I seldom buy music because I find it so intrusive. (It’s EVERYWHERE whether you want it or not.) I think the last CD I bought was ELO’s latest: ZOOM and my next purchase will be a replacement for my stolen copy of Spinal Tap’s Break Like the Wind. I don’t recall the last album I bought, but I do buy them quite a bit and transfer them to minidisc.
I’m just now 31 and have been an old fogey since I was around 17.
I bought two.
‘Ghost Tropic’ by Songs:Ohia. Not as good as I hoped, as the other stuff I’ve heard, but I can give it some time.
‘Hunker Down’ by The Junkers. Good stuff.
Blues For Allah by The Grateful Dead
Last album I bought?
Millennium Monsterworks 2000 by Fantomas & The Melvins
Before that:
Lovage: Songs to Make Love to Your Old Lady By
The last CD I bought was “Spiritual Machines” by Our Lady Peace.
Speaking of “borrowed” CDs, I really should get my brother to give me back my copy of “The Audio of Being” by the Matthew Good Band! He has this thing about borrowing my CDs, yet he never gives them back! Wait… he did give back my copy of “Physical Graffiti”, but only because one of our other friends wanted to borrow it.
I’ve been looking for the MGB CD over at his place for the last few weeks, and can’t seem to find it; he joked that he’d thrown it out and/or burned it. I certainly hope not… I should have bought two copies of it when I originally bought it. (limited-edition set with the lyrics to all their songs included)
