What was the last album that you bought?

Ok, I have an admission. I’m turning 40 this year and it seems that I’ve reached the age where all new music annoys me.

Although I don’t believe I’ve actually said it, I have thought the words ‘How can you listen to that noise!?’ when being confronted with something that, to my ears, lacked aspects of music that I appreciate such as tone, rhythm, melody, etc.

While I’m willing to accept that my tastes have ‘matured’, I’m not ready for old fartdom or to suddenly discover a liking for the Living Strings Orchestra. I’m feeling out of the loop of what’s going on musically and would appreciate input on what is grabbing this particular group’s interests these days.

For the record (no pun intended), the last album I bought (last week) was the movie soundtrack to ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’; an odd little movie but there are some great songs that stick in your head.

IIRC, MC5’s Kick Out the Jams.

The Invisible Band by Travis. Fabulous.

Iron Maiden “Rock In Rio”

This Desert Life - Counting Crows

“Bedroom Boogie” by the Red Elvises. Pretty slow, but still rockin’!

I’m sure I’ve bought SOMETHING since, but the last one I can recall is ‘Comfort Eagle’ by Cake. It’s very good.

There’s not much out there that interests me now, unfortunately.

Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, by Lucinda Williams. Bought it at her concert, but I haven’t listened to it yet. She played a lot of the songs live, though, and they were really good.

The last CD I bought was Abby Lincoln’s “Wholly Earth.” I haven’t purchased a vinyl album in a long time…I’m guessing a used copy of “Good Creek Symphony” for .10 at Plan 9 Records.

I bought 2 about a month ago:

Ágætis Byrjun by Sigur Rós
Millions Now Living Will Never Die by Tortoise

Both are excellent recent releases. Not all new music sucks, just everything on the radio (some college stations excepted).

A Night at the Opera by Blind Guardian.
<shameless plug>

Incidentally, all you Tolkien fans out there ought to check out their previous album, Nightfall in Middle Earth. It’s a concept album based on The Silmarillion, and I cannot possibly say enough good things about it. It has phenomenal vocals, a superb blend of metal bombast and acoustic melody, and interludes of sound effects or spoken narration between the tracks for atmosphere. This is without a doubt my favorite album at the moment. If you can find the album, buy it.

All right, that’s enough gushing for one day, off to lunch now.

The last album I bought was AC/DC’s Highway to Hell.

The last CD I bought would be a live Blink 182, which I actually bought for my kid for Christmas, but after listening to an excerpt from “It’d be nice to get a blowjob from your Mom” I decided it wasn’t a wise selection for an 8 year old, so I kept it.

Points for the Aussie music reference.

Lets see, it’s not just one, it’s around 10. I can’t even remember all of the names so lets see how many I can get:

Iron Maiden: Rock in Rio
Blind Guardian: Night at the Opera
Witchfynde: The Witching Hour
Nightwish: Over the Hills and Far Away
Tygers of Pan Tang: Spellbound
Blitzkrieg: don’t remember the name
Spiral Arcitect: don’t remember
Blaze Bayley: 10th Dimention
Rob Rock: don’t know
Diamond Head: don’t know, has Am I evil on it

There might even be a few more that I don’t remember though, I was at a metal show over the weekend and went nuts what can I say. I’ve also got to go out an dget the new Motorhead Album.

Last Cd I bought…The Hives Vini Vidi Vicious
Last album The Ventures in Space
Lord how I love the thrift stores.

Two anthologies from National Public Radio…one of Medieval chants and hymns, one of Renaissance music.

Justified them as “gifts for the wife,” as she enjoys the stuff as much as I do, which doesn’t apply to most of the music I favor.

She outfoxed me by carrying them off to her office to listen to on the computer, without even spinning them here once. Damn her eyes.

I can’t remember which was the last CD I bought - it was either Incubus’ Morning View, BT’s R&R (Rare and Remixed), or the compilation 50,000,000 DJs Can’t Be Wrong, Vol. 1.

Something in Japanese by the Flametrick Subs.

The 3 albums I bought most recently (this past weekend):

Chargers Street Gang: “Hop the Bop Apocalypse” (CD)

Antibalas: “Liberation Afro Beat Vol. 1” (vinyl)

Hawkwind: “Space Ritual” (CD)

“Early Tracks” by the Old 97s
