I’m not a big fan of Iron Maiden. Not that I don’t like them, just not a big fan. My brother-in-law had an album of theirs that had a cover of Jethro Tull’s “Cross-Eyed Mary” that was killer, better than the original. (I think I’ll go post that in that other thread…)
It’s been many years since I was a big fan, but my favorite Maiden song is still Two Minutes to Midnight off the Powerslave album. I used to listen to that song very loud and sing along when I was in the army; people could never tell if I was sick and eager to kill or if I meant it as a serious war protest.
If I had to pick just one, it would be Revelations. That song knocks me out. Still Life was the first Maiden song I ever heard and it hooked me on the group, so it also holds a special place in my heart. I lost my virginity while listening to Rime of the Ancient Mariner, so that one’s memorable. Let’s see…one that no one’s mentioned…To Tame A Land, the one about “Dune”. Good stuff. It would be easier for me to find Maiden stuff I didn’t like than to list all the ones I did, so let me just say that they lost me with Seventh Son also, and I always crack up when I hear, "INVADERS! … fighting!
How can no one have said 22 Acacia Avenue by now? That song kick ass.
Anyway my top 5 (in no order)
22 Acacia Ave
Relvelations
Still Life
Aces High (Even better with the Winston Chuchill intro on Live After Death)
Hallowed be thy name
Of course now I am pissed because I should have added Trooper, Run to the Hills, Number of the Beast, Children of the Damned, 2 mins to midnight, etc etc…
Hey where is Ed the Head? I figured he would be here by now.
Dung Beetle which lasted longer: Your “first time” or Rhime of the Ancient Mariner?
Dung Beetle, you probably should have said your first and second time were while listening to ROTAM. Ha!
I still remember listening to ROTAM in freshman English class. We had just finished reading/disecting the poem and a friend brought in the album (Vinyl of course) to play to the class.
I’ll tell you where I was, while you guys were here talking about Iron F’ing Maiden, old Eddie was seeing them live at Merriweather near Baltimore! (where’s the little head banging smilie?)
I really couldn’t tell you what my favorite Maiden song was. I would guess that the top few would have to be, in no real order:
Powerslave
From Here to Eternity
The Educated Fool
Remember Tomorrow
Number of the Beast (what a great live song)
I guess I could name some more but it would be more like reading the back of an album. BTW the show was great. Motorhead sounded ok, I think it was more to do with the sound then anything. Dio, who I’ve never seen, was really good, I’m probably going to pick up some more of his stuff. Maiden of course was great. They pulled a couple of songs I never thought I would hear live like Die With Your Boots On. I’m actually looking into getting tickets for the Pitt show and the Columbus show in two weeks. Anyone looking for a good show should really see them this time around.
