Nothing. Trumpism isn’t going away any time soon. Even after the Dear Orange Leader dies, there will be many copies.
There is no putting that genie back into the bottle.
This is the American way of life now.

The Tea party went away- largely. The MAGAs can go away also.
The Tea Party went away because they morphed into the Maga party.
If Trump wins in 2024, I don’t plan on giving up on democracy in 2028 without a fight. Donations, volunteering. Same as 2016 and 2020, though I can hope for further creativity.
Both of these. I’m semi-comfortably ensconced in a deep blue bubble, will probably retire this year and live very near elderly parents who aren’t going anywhere. While I’m not quite rock solid secure, I’m close enough for government work. Leaving the country makes little subjective sense in my particular situation, even if I wanted to. Which I don’t, particularly.
I’ll just hunker down, hope for the best (or at least not-worst) in the one hand and try to resist the urge to shit in the other so I don’t find out which one will fill up first.
Mexico. I could move there today and retire early on what I have now. His election would just give me more incentive to retire earlier than planned.
But then there is the very real fear that Trump could fuck up Social Security and reduce benifts for everyone or specifically expats.
Nothing, and honestly I think most of you are overreacting a bit.
I live in the UK, so am shielded from some of Trump’s actions.
But I still expect Trump to pull out of NATO and ally with Putin (putting Europe at risk.)
There will also be mass pardons for insurrectionists - so they can try again.
Gerrymandering and rule changes so Republicans can declare electoral victory in their state without counting votes.
We really aren’t. If America has reached the point at which the rule of law is no longer supported by the majority, the country is fucked.
Both of my parents and my two older sisters were Canadian citizens, so I believe I would have an advantage if I chose to move north (anybody know?).
Realistically, though, I’ll probably just set the countdown app on my phone to the day his term ends and tune into Anderson Cooper every night for a dose of outrage.
mmm
I’ll hold my breath till my face turns purple and then you will be sorry!
I already live in another country, so there isn’t much else I can do.
My options are few and not particularly good.
When I think about Project 2025 – the stuff they’re already saying out loud – I can’t be sanguine.
The less democratic/more authoritarian the thing that you can imagine is – I might offer – the less likely it would be to happen under Trump 2.0.
The glaringly obvious problem, though, is that the probability of horrid things happening under T2 never reaches zero.
When you take a shot at the king, you had better not miss. A second term would embolden Trump and his supporters in ways not really seen since [Mike Godwin has basically signed off at this point] the Third Reich.
I don’t know what it looks like or how it plays out. But I’m pretty comfortable that it ain’t good. I’m also pretty convinced that the Social Darwinism element of it will feature prominently – radical oppression of, if not frank violence toward the more/most vulnerable members of our society.
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” I believe that T2 would immediately try to bend it back so suddenly and forcefully that it would snap.
What Trump wants is power. How he got his supporters on board is grievance, bigotry, and unabashed hate.
My biggest concern is the passion and the force with which both would try to get their itch scratched and the damage that would do.
There’s a question about how realistic that is.
There’s no question that, if elected, Trump will do his level best to turn himself into an authoritarian ruler, and he’ll have the full cooperation of all but a few elected members of his party. He’ll have a Cabinet dedicated to helping him achieve that goal, and then carrying out his every whim. And he won’t voluntarily step down on January 20, 2029.
What I’m going to do?
First of all, stay. This is the country I love, and I’m not going to be pushed out of it.
But after that, it really depends on what actually happens, what his attempt to become the sort of tinpot ruler we used to make fun of elsewhere in the world actually looks like here. Where would the pressure points be? What could be accomplished by citizen resistance or state government refusal to recognize his powers?
Since a huge chunk of his supporters are evangelicals who identify as Christian, I expect to be pretty vocal about how they’re supporting a man who exemplifies pretty much the opposite of the fruits of the Spirit that Paul lists in Galatians, and that the policies he’ll enable are antithetical to the Gospel. Don’t know how much good it will do, but it’s something I’m able to do better than most people can.
That’s where the “being a refugee” comes into it. I expect Canada and Mexico to be taking in a lot of displaced Americans.
Canada takes in a lot of refugees. They have specific rules and “I hate Trump” wasn’t one of them in 2016 (nor was I hate W years before). It’s much more difficult to emigrate to Canada, generally, than it it to emigrate to the US.
Yeah, but when Trump starts up his full-power bullshit, it will be more than “I hate Trump”. It will be, “Trump wants to put me in a camp to stop me from being transgender”, or “Trump wants me to die because of this ectopic pregnancy”, or “Trump wants to try me for treason because I said his hair looked fake”.
I have no options. I’m older and not wealthy. Actually, when I try to think about this, I get so worked up that I have to force myself not to think about it.
I would not be surprised to suffer a heart attack the moment I heard the news. I cried in 2016 and I know I’d cry more if it happens again.
As mentioned, emigrating is not just a matter of hopping on a plane. We have friends who gave up on America and emigrated to Portugal. It took them a year to get it all arranged, and seem happy enough living there, but living in another culture has its drawbacks. Costa Rica is another country that has a large expat community.
As for me, I’ll certainly quit watching the news. It already annoys me, and having to see that pig-fucker’s face every night would just be more than I could bear. I’ve toyed with not paying taxes, but that will only end up causing me pain and having my accounts frozen. Basically, I’m just hoping I outlive the asshole so I can celebrate his demise.
Good luck with that. “Trump wants” isn’t good enough.
I’ll be angry and disgusted, and I will continue to vote Blue, just as I have for the almost 50 years I’ve lived in an overwhelmingly Red county, where my vote counts for nothing. Unless the Repubs take total control and get their long-cherished wish to do away with Social Security and Medicare or do something to cause my 401k to go to shit, whoever is in the White House will have little effect on me.
