Aside: this is a bit surprising to me; isn’t Europe even today full of homegrown demonstrations of how this is possible?
As for me, I’m of a vulnerable demographic or two, but in a blue state. As long as the economy doesn’t totally crash (which it could), I’ll probably be okay for the medium term. My nephews and nieces? Them I worry about.
Of course. The difference is, here, there is active resistance to the machinations of the right in which Nazis and fascists are openly and fiercely labeled Nazis and fascists; in the wake of the revelations detailed in that article, there was a regional election in which the AfD candidate who was expected to win lost support and was narrowly defeated. Whereas in the US, Trump is ascendant with no meaningful organized popular opposition and nobody in the mainstream dialog calling him what he is. That’s what confuses the people here. It’s not about the rise to power, it’s about average Americans’ oblivious disregard for what that actually means and apparent blithe acceptance of it.
I’m not sure what you mean by this. There’s plenty of organized popular opposition to trump. After all, he lost the last election! Now whether there will be enough opposition this time remains to be seen. I certainly hope so. But it’s not true that there’s no opposition.
I mean from the European perspective: mass marches in the streets, vs highly motivated people arguing quietly on the internet. In general, Europeans are perplexed that Americans don’t march more. But then I remind them that Europeans have much stronger organized labor and employment protections than Americans do, so there’s more freedom for political agitation.
But this is getting off topic. The important part is that Joe Biden and his mouthpieces are only very weakly describing Trump as a fundamental threat to democracy; the dialog about who and what he really represents is consigned to the fringe. Whereas in Germany it’s openly discussed that AfD is trying to forge a path back to Nazism.
I know. I won’t need a passport so I can depart in a rush if needs be, it is far away from the madness, Trump probably doesn’t even know it exists, and I have family there.
Not being American, there will be no direct impacts for me with a Trump presidency. BUT, it will embolden the nationalistic right-wing factions of Australia, and I suspect other western nations as well. And that concerns me deeply.
Seriously. The lunacy of this country is hilarious. The only answer the other side has to this criminal ass clown is a doddering old fool of an ass clown? Neither of them should be anywhere near the White House except maybe as tourists.
Trump could very well win but I probably won’t see it. Like every other cop in southeastern Wisconsin I’m going to to find myself in downtown Milwaukee during the RNC. The chaos of that will probably kill me.
Probably use some iron-on stencils to make a T-shirt that says something idiotic, like “Habba Trump Gump?”
And consider taking advantage of my concealed carry permit as more than just a card in my wallet and an occasional convenience.
Make sure there’s plenty of fresh good quality storage space in my dashcams. Drive the speed limit, watch out for lumbering impressionists of stunted subhumans like Boebert, Greene, or the rest of the indifferentiable blob. They could be ironic hipsters, for all I know. Try to avoid all obstacles when on the roadways.
Don’t pick up hitchhikers. Don’t get lost on a rafting trip…pretty much anywhere. Consider becoming adept at bow-hunting off my back porch.
Or nothing. Because, fuck 'em. A country gets the “government” it deserves, it would seem, in this case and nearly every single other case, historically.
We got stuck in the US with Millard fucking Fillmore, ferchrissakes. Granted, one term only, but one survives.
Interesting, thanks, @Eva_Luna. It looks like, according to that link, that I am a Canadian citizen (or would be after doing the paperwork and paying the fee).
The only trouble with Trump winning will be the overreacting from the left. People in this thread have already mentioned taking part in demonstrations. Those tend to lead to riots and civil unrest. If everyone keeps thier heads level there should not be anything to worry about. If you think things will be bad, there are things you can do to prevent that. Secretly (or not) the left wants things to be terrible if Trump wins, so I suspect nobody will take these preventative measures and things will be bad. It’s a self fullfilling prophecy.
Regardless of who the POTUS is, there are thousands of elected officials below him/her that make way more of a difference in your life than that person does. Focus on your local, county, state and other elected officials in your community. I don’t really give a shit who the POTUS is. I dont get why people get all fired up over this.
If you look into Project 2025, they’re aware of that fact and have a plan in place to correct that little bug, too.
Screaming about the “DEEP STATE” is a ploy to allow you to appoint loyalists and henchmen to replace smart, experienced, passionate civil servants whose loyalties are to the Constitution, the American people, and the Rule of Law rather than a party or a person.
Cynically, there are those who probably decry the possibility of progressives moving out of the country rather than amassing huge quantities of firearms and spoiling for violence.
Some of us get worked up because a) our day jobs were made absolutely miserable the last time Trump was in office because they are 100% tied to how the Federal Government does things; and b) we actually care about how the behavior of the Federal Government affects people other than ourselves.
The problem is, when the shooting starts, the yahoo riffraff tend to melt away pretty quickly, leaving behind the ones who have some idea of what they’re doing.
Yeah, I’ll be pissed off and really disappointed in a lot of my fellow Americans, but I don’t see myself doing anything right away. I’ll always vote, and I might start demonstrating more.
Now if he goes full-tilt dictator and starts suspending Constitutional rights or stuff like that, then that may change. I’m personally holding out some hope that if he does get re-elected, that this time around, maybe his handlers will be a bit more professional and will firmly seize the governing reins, while letting him blather and bloviate all he likes. Better that, than the sort of near complete chaos we seemed to have from about 2019 forward.
There is zero, I mean ZERO, chance of this happening. This is what we all hoped for the last go-round, and while it kind of happened a bit, Trump chaffed every time one of those “adults in the room” told him he couldn’t or shouldn’t do something.
Now, he’s had years more time to build up his resentment of these sorts of people, and has made it clear that none of these people will be anywhere near his new administration. Positions will be staffed on the basis of loyalty to Trump himself, and none of those people will ever push back on any of his ideas. Every stupid idea he has will be implemented as fast as physically possible.
