What will you do if Trump wins in November?

OK, then pass the poutine.

mmm

Great question. One I do ask myself frequently.

It has to get further down the continuum from where it is now before I judge that we’ve reached the end of the republic and I need to move to Mexico.

There’s a lot of hyperbole here that folks are going to leave the county if Trump gets elected. We had that 7 years ago too. A number of Hollywood types (Alec Baldwin?) said they were leaving the county if Trump was elected. I haven’t stalked Alec, but near as I can figure he gutted in out and stayed in the country. I think he managed to stay one step in front of the FBI and fought off federal custody.

My hyperbole above, aside, we all draw the lines in different places, and in my years here on the Dope I rarely see opinions change, so these discussions are frequently fools errands but . . .

I don’t like Trump. I didn’t vote for him in either election. I’m an independent. But good God could the Democrats help a brother out here?? My choice is between Trump who I don’t like, and Biden who will serve only through part of his term, which will no doubt be finished by Harris. I get a couple of years of Biden who I think is barely holding it together, followed by Harris who appears (to me) to be a complete empty suit. If either party would give the American people of somewhat viable choice, they would win in a landslide.

So this isn’t about one or the other, it’s about alternatives. And the Dems aren’t giving me a great one.

And while we’ve had four years of Trump and know what he is, we also get to see what he isn’t. The what he didn’t do is end the republic, put Biden and Democrats in jail, and give folks here on the Dope reason to flee the country. In my friends group (50s - 60s, upper middle class, educated, politically in tune, across both parties but middle of the road) we don’t like Trump at all, but aren’t thrilled with Biden / Harris. And aren’t convinced that the American public want, or are going to allow the worst of Trump to be realized.

Trump’s currently out of office.

I wouldn’t worry about the guy that attacked my kid while that guy was in prison for his crimes.

But what happens if he gets out?

The question is really about if Trump wins the Presidency in November.

Which I think is profoundly different.

I understand that he’s out of office, thanks for the clarification.

The context created by the totality of my comment was much more important than the statement on its own.

Biden has turned out to be a far more capable president than I expected him to ever be. I agree that he’s showing signs of the effects of his age, but this insistence that he’s definitely at death’s door rankles me. I think he’s holding it together pretty well (and certainly miles better than the current alternative).

Second attorney for CO, Shannon Stevenson, takes her turn at bat.

No, it won’t. It’ll just be the same cycle of yes men and women trying to get him a Diet Coke.

Trump has never been a world builder and he isn’t going to be now. It’s just going to be people scurrying around, failing, resigning and getting replaced by the endless stream of people who think they can get something out of it. They can’t. No one outside of his own family will ever be a trusted aide to Trump.

May I ask, what signs are these that you are noticing?

Oh yes, If I were American I’d probably go for Australia or New Zealand. There is a large risk of widespread war between Russia allied with Trumps USA on one side and Nato and EU on the other.
Not much use to emigrate to Europe to end in a war anyway.

I am concerned with the whole “It Can’t Happen Here” situation we find ourselves in now, but it’s not yet a done deal. While Trump has a non-zero chance of winning in November, there is also a good chance he’ll lose (again). I am not willing to leave because of him - why should I leave because he’s a no talent ass-clown? I’m staying. Enjoying my coffee.

People are saying he confused Haley with Pelosi, thinks Obama is president, doesn’t know what a supply chain is, and can barely string a grammatical sentence together!

I thought that you were talking about Biden, not Trump.

Or are you just pulling my leg here?

Yeah I’m just mocking the people who claim Biden is going senile.

Well he did just today mistake two current European leaders with two dead ones from the 90’s.

But the question isn’t about what you will do now.
We are being asked about what we plan to do if Tramp wins in November.

I don’t mean to be a pessimist, but he’ll be 82 when/if he starts his second term. He’s at death’s door almost by definition. According to the actuarial tables he’s only got a one in three chance of finishing his second term. Yeah, he’s got the best healthcare in the world, but he’s also got the most stressful job in the world and I’m concerned that those two things will cancel each other out. I don’t want Kamala Harris to be President. I’ve seen absolutely nothing over the past four years to indicate that she’s remotely cut out for the job. Maybe I’m wrong? But I think it’d be a big mistake to keep her on the ticket.

Not remotely true. The life expectancy of an American male Biden’s age (taking into account no other factors, and although his job is stressful I suspect he’s significantly healthier than the average) is 8.2 years.

If you are Jewish, you can make aliyah to Israel. That is unfortunately not a safe place to be right now-- until the Hamas attack, I was grumbling that I’d make aliyah if Trump were re-elected (my son will be 18 in October, so I won’t be abandoning a minor). Not really an option now, though.

I don’t know why I forgot about that. That is an option for me. Also my engineering degree but I am getting a bit long in the tooth to be useful anymore.
