What'd you like on your hot dog?

My friend and I just went to the Stand, a very nice hot dog joint in Encino, CA. The dogs tasted great, spicy with lots of “snap”. I thought they were going to bite back.

I got the slaw dog - hot dog with cole slaw and mustard. They also had a Boston dog - dog with baked beans. Strange combinations at first but very tasty.

Another dog joint in town, the Wiener Factory, has red cabbage. A departure from the normal sauerkraut but also very tasty.

We all know about the Chicago (everything but the kitchen sink) dog. Do you have a favorite joint with odd toppings? How do you like on your dog? If I was visiting your town, where would you take me for a great dog?

I currently live on the left coast. I’d take you back to Chicago, where I grew up and they understand proper hot dogs.

And when we got there, I’d order a hot dog made as recommended here.

There’s really nothing like a real Windy City hot dog, bought from a street vendor in near the Loop. Yummy!

And when we get back, please tell this former Chicagoan why I can’t find Gyros in northern CA. Where are the Greeks?!?

I would gladly take you up on your offer. I didn’t realize Chicago dogs had pickles and relish. Aren’t poppy seed buns a must as well?

Can’t help you there but if you make it down to L.A. I can get you some good ones. And I’m surprised at how many great burger joints there are around here. I think L.A. must be the burger capital of the world.

And no ketchup!

mustard, onion, chili and bbq slaw.

BBQ slaw?

Plain buns, in my experience. I don’t think the seeded buns would sit well in the warmer, too much steam. But I’m sure there’s local varations.

(Countdown to the first New Yorker to show up in this thread to claim title of the Most Authentic Dogs. Which may well be true. Prove it – take us all to your great hot dog place and we’ll all get lunch. :))

Ahem: “variations”

Yeah, I was also begging that question. ?

Mustard, ketchup (don’t even start), cheese, and chili.

I hate onions and sauerkraut makes me gag.

I don’t go to many restaurants, so there’s no place I could recommend.

:: puzzled look ::

You folks don’t put peanut butter on them?

Where would a good hotdog be without peanut butter? And nothing else?

• 1 lb Chopped cabbage
• 4 Tbs ketchup
• 1 Tbs vinegar
• ½ tsp salt
• 3 Tbs sugar
• ½ tsp pepper
• ½ tsp red pepper

let flavors meld for 20-30 minutes.

It’s great.

Mustard, relish, onions. or chili and onions and cheese. or kraut and mustard.

No ketchup!

Reeder, thanks for the recipe. Just in time for baseball season!

For me, it’s mustard and, occasionally, kraut on a plain bun.

Also, I’ll sometimes have a chili dog or Coney Island but I consider those different types of sausage-and-bun based sandwiches.

That must be one big hot dog.

psssttt…

You can adjust the recipe accordingly.

Mustard, sweet pickle relish, and onions.
