The weather’s warming up as winter slowly gives way to spring’s new bounty, so naturally I … simmered a bean & sausage soup all afternoon.
So delicious with a crusty loaf of fresh bread … but I don’t have any, so we’ll see if the oyster crackers aren’t too stale yet.
Whatcha got at your place for dinner tonight?
(Don’t feel bad for me, by the way. The soup came out friggin’ awesome. Pig three ways - ham, kielbasa, bacon - elevates any beans to heavenly status.)
I do not feel bad for you…sounds terrific!
We did a pot roast with potatoes, carrots, and onions in the crock pot. I find that I’m really just taking the easy way out with dinner a lot these days! However, I did bake a cake and creme brulee this weekend.
I’m making pasta with sugar snaps, asparagus, and spring onion (and a little bacon) for the Ukulele Lady, so she’s getting a little *primavera *in her life. I’m in the mood for a bowl of red, so I’ll probably get a small pot of it going soon. Chili is a year-round thing for me.
Are you people getting any local spring veggies where you are? It’s still early for NYC; the spring onions were the only seasonal thing I found in the Whole Foods produce area. Keeping an eye peeled for ramps and fiddleheads.
Grab & go from the local market. Mac & cheese and cold chicken.
Guy Fieri’s Penne with Cajun Hot Links, sorta. Dropped the shrimp and used linguiça instead. Delicious!
Leftover calzone (mozzarella cheese, sausage, pepperoni, minced garlic) and salad.
Swedish meatballs and green beans here.
Our CSA just offered us their first local asparagus, and I have some leaf lettuce ready to harvest on the back porch.
Undecided here tonight, but the other day I made French onion soup for the first time…
It was the BOMB.
During the week it’s often catch-as-catch-can. Usually a sandwich or something. But Friday I made Caprese stuffed Portobello mushrooms. Sunday I made shrimp and pasta, using the same sauce recipe I use for escargots, only with shrimp instead of snails, and no mushrooms. Since I’m still avoiding carbohydrates, I didn’t have any of the leftover pasta (there was no sauce left over). Upon my suggestion, Mrs. L.A. heated the angel hair pasta in a pan with some olive oil, garlic powder (I thought she should use actual garlic, but she didn’t want to), and tomatoes, topped with a couple of chopped basil leaves.
Caesar salad with grilled chicken and a small bowl of Italian wedding soup.
Tonight is Mongolian beef with roasted broccoli.
Tonight we had Southwest salad. I got a bag of American salad and added pieces of rotisserie chicken breast (I would have preferred fried, but Mrs. L.A. bought the chicken), black beans, corn, shredded cheddar cheese, ranch dressing, and BBQ sauce. And I had a three-serving can of Monster Ultra Zero.
Garlic crescent rolls, cheddar cheese slices and ice water, with a small fruit tart and vanilla ice cream for dessert.
Yesterday was drizzly and unseasonably cold. I gave the Ukulele Lady a saute pan of broccoli rabe with cut-up butternut squash, canellini beans, and a sliced chicken sausage.
I made myself a pot of soup beans: pintos with onion, garlic, and a ham hock. Inspired by the OP, I cut up a smoked sausage and added it for the last half hour. It was delicious, but it destroyed the hillbilly/hobo vibe of eating a pot a soup beans which I find to be the chief pleasure of soup beans.
Broiled perch, couscous, tossed salad, ice water.
Went all-American tonight: meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and green beans with almonds.
Potatoes were from a box, but who the fuck cares - they’re a smooth, creamy gravy-delivery system, and tonight’s homemade gravy was the shit. Comes out differently each time, because I don’t do silly things like measure. Just cook Wondra flour in lotsa butter, then pour in chicken broth.
Meatloaf recipe: Meatloaf - Cafe Delites
Really nice glaze on the loaf.
Green beans sauteed in butter until just crisp-tender, and getting browned streaks, then splash in some chicken broth and cook it away. The buttery chicken residue makes a bit of sauce, and I actually remembered to pre toast the almonds this time.
Holy god, everything was on point AND was done at the same time. That miracle doesn’t happen often.
Ribeye steaks, baked potato (we shared one), and Spring mix salad.
Recipe bookmarked.
Had spicy chicken pad Thai last night from my favorite Thai place.
mmm
I’m making a Sunday gravy today for tomorrow’s dinner with guests. For those who don’t know, it’s a tomato based pasta sauce with various braised meats and meatballs.
Tonight will be croque monsieur using Ina Garten’s recipe (arteries? who needs arteries?) and a salad mix from the garden.
Tomorrow will be shakshuka and crusty bread.
