Today it was a surprisingly good fish chowder from the leftover fish from the fish fry we went to last night. (Onions + potatoes + celery + corn + a little carrot + a little garlic + broth + milk + leftover fried fish, diced up.)
oof
Mrs. L.A. took us out for Mexican tonight. Carne asada, pollo asado, camarones, arroz, frijoles, soft corn tortillas, jalapeño poppers… and we each had two 20 oz. ‘Cadillac margaritas’. I’m stuffed like a demon. And there are leftovers.
Incidentally, the corn and chicken was good last night. I put it in a casserole over slices of polenta, and sprinkled the cotija cheese on top.
Oh. I seldom drink. I’m feeling those margaritas.
I made a crock pot full of Chilli. 2.5lbs Hamburger, dark and light red Kidney beans, black beans, pintos, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and my secret spices. We will be at it all week with whatever else added in as the week goes along.
It’s a beautiful 60s spring day in Portland, so I’m thinking the year’s first grilled hot dogs, a bowl of potato salad and some doctored up Bush’s beans.
Sounds good. My MIL has taken to sending my Wife and I a box of Omaha steaks for Christmas and birthdays and such. The steaks are OK. BUT their hot dogs are probably the best I’ve ever had. It’s kinda weird.
Made a burrito mix today. We’ll have enough leftover for a few days. It’s really all about the toppings. Lettuce (must be ice burgh, sliced, not chopped) tomatoes, cheese, onions and sour cream. The jalapenos go right into the mix.
Hebrew National for us, consistently rated tops in retail hot dogs you can find everywhere.
Pork shoulder with a maple syrup- mustard glaze under pineapple slices. Going to make a tahini yoghurt lemon dressing for a salad.
I just ordered some of their gourmet franks. I’ll try to remember to let you know what I think. With shipping, they’re about $3.00 each, so I hope they’re good.
Leftover Mexican food tonight. Probably in about an hour or so.
Cowboy supper tonite. Steaks on the grill. Steak fries, cowboy beans and cornbread.
Everything is ready but the steaks. They come off at the degree of doneness you like, I am always last. Well-well done for me.
Hebrew National franks are very good, but I prefer Nathan’s Famous (also all-beef) for a supermarket hot dog. Nathan’s started out in Coney Island; are their products available out there in America where everybody is?
I would cheerfully buy Chicago’s Vienna Beef if I could get it here.
For a special treat, I stop in at Schaller and Weber on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and buy their hand-made frankfurters…plus their bratwurst and bauenwurst.
Tonight we had a veggie dinner from Anna Jones’s A MODERN WAY TO COOK. I would burn that book, but the Ukulele Lady would only buy a new copy.
This was pretty good, though: A potato-carrot roesti with grilled scallions, sauteed fresh spinach, first rate cottage cheese from a fancy-schmancy local dairy, and one fried egg apiece.
(Roesti is like a huge potato pancake, cooked in a 10-inch skillet. I usually make it with potatoes only, Swiss-style, but adding carrot didn’t hurt it and added Vitamin A. I can see for miles and miles now.)
Or Nathans for grocery store brand - I almost cried the day they stopped making Hebrew National. Luckily for me though I’m not too far from the Vienna Beef factory outlet store where you can get dogs like they use at Chicago hot dog stands and I’ve never seen in a grocery store.
Tonight is Greek style lamb chops and potatoes (olive oil, lemon, oregano) courtesy of Pere’s Fresh Market - at $7/Lb. hot and ready to eat I really can’t help myself.
Hebrew National is alive and well, unless they went out of business in the last six months. Website.
Otto’s, a local butcher, makes very good dogs that have gotten high ratings nationwide.
You’re absolutely correct - I was thinking of Best’s Kosher
Beef and broccoli stir-fry tonight, based on this version:
… with some rice for my I.T. Guy and flat rice noodles for me. It was really good! The sauce is particularly tasty.
Crab tacos, couscous and steamed veggies (including tri-color carrots). For dessert - the most important part of any meal, imo - vegan chocolate pie with a cashew nut crust.
And all of it was really, really good.
Falafel in pita pockets, with lettuce, tomato, homemade tzatziki, and feta.
Meatballs and schpagootz, and a green salad. Ukulele Lady had roasted eggplant, kumatoes, and onion over edamame fettuccine.
Mrs. L.A. is allergic to eggplant. Dammit.
