I have a wonky 3 disc player in the computer room, I think Mr. Beckwall won it in a contest somewhere. Not great sounding, but it does the job. So tonight, as I write another final for my dialysis tech students (no, really, I’m not procrastinating
by playing on the SDMB), I’m listening to:
Want Two by Rufus Wainwright. I loved the previously “want” CD and this one is really excellent, too.
**The Motorcycle Diaries ** soundtrack. This is a great CD! I listen to this one at least once a day now. Almost hypnotic, very lovely music.
Mellow Gold by our boy Beck. No, we’re not his parents, but we would adopt him in a snap. This CD was made for $200 or something like that, and it’s really primitive stuff compared to his recent recordings, but I love it.
Long night ahead. Happy Christmas break (soon) to all you teachers out there!
Since I joined the cult of iTunes, I don’t use these “compact discs” anymore much. But I’ve still got a 6-disc changer in the car:
my own mix CD of Pizzicato Five’s best tracks
They came out with a “best of” called RIP when they broke up, but I don’t like their choices for that one. Mine’s better.
The Incredibles Soundtrack
This actually isn’t as good as I was hoping. I remember loving the music during the movie, but listening to it on its own is just kind of… eh. I do like “The Incredits” though.
Pink Panther’s Penthouse Party
A mix of electronic versions of bachelor pad type music; pretty good for an anthology. I just bought it for the Pizzicato Five version of “Girl from Ipanema.”
Neko Case: Blacklisted
Holy cow, I can’t believe I’m just recently getting into Neko Case. Her voice is astounding. The whole “alt-country” thing wears down on me kind of, but this is still an amazing record. And “Lady Pilot” is the best song ever recorded.
Bjork: Homogenic
For the longest time, Post was my favorite Bjork album, and I was savagely mocked for this by other Bjork fans. I just got Homogenic a week or so ago, and it’s growing on me a lot.
my own mix of Soul Coughing’s best
Again, I don’t like the “official” best-of CD as much as my own choices. This CD never leaves my car.
I have the radio on right now, actually, but in the CD player itself, I have Pearl Jam’s No Code with Tool’s *Aenima *and the Garden State soundtrack both stacked on its lid as they were both in it fairly recently as well.
The two I’ve been switching back and forth with this weekend are Death Cab for Cutie’s We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes and Assemblage 23’s Ground single.
Mike Keneally and the Metropole Orkest: The Universe Will Provide - probably the most natural integration of rock guitar with orchestra I’ve ever heard - especially if your tastes run to Stravinsky or Varese.
King Crimson - Live in Central Park 1974 in which Robert Fripp had a religious experience during the performance of the song “Starless”,leading to his breaking up the band for seven years.
Frank Zappa - The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, Disc 1. FZ’s last tour, which I was fortunate enough to catch in Detroit.
Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn, because the last seven minutes of “Side 1” can bring me to either tears or orgasm, depending upon my mood.
Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius, an amazing debut which I’m listening to more because at age 46 I’ve taken up bass guitar.
PC: Jay-Z/Linkin Park - Collision Course. I know, gimmick, but it’s actually a damn good CD.
Stereo: Mitch Hedberg, Mitch All Together. I mainly use my stereo when I’m listening to comedy albums.
Truck: Metallica- Load, S&M Disc 2 and Garage Inc. Disc 1; Evanescence - Fallen, and 2 mix CDs. The truck CD changer mainly gets listened to on my way to work, when I need high-energy stuff.
I have one of those 300-disc changers, so a list is kinda out of the question. What’s playing right now is A Boxful of Treasures: the **Sandy Denny ** box set.
I have a 3-disc player in the living room that will play MP3s as well as regular CDs; right now I have two of the former and one of the latter in it:[ul]
[li]a homemade Christmas songs mix (Ella Fitzgerald, The Beach Boys, Barenaked Ladies, Blink 182, Sting, etc.)[/li][li]a homemade Christmas instrumentals mix (Mannheim Steamroller, Canadian Brass, pipe organ, etc.)[/li][li]Candlelight Carols by The Choir of Trinity Church[/ul][/li]Alas, my car’s player does not like MP3s; right now I’m listening to this CD-R:[ul]
[li]a homemade Stevie Wonder “best of”[/ul][/li]Yep, I love my iTunes and CD burner.
I just made the Stevie Wonder CD this afternoon, and before it I was listening to Uh Oh by Cowboy Mouth – and before that was Meteora by Linkin Park, which will likely be put back in when I’ve had my (always temporary) fill of Stevie Wonder.
On the computer today: switching between Nellie McKay’s Get Away From Me, Interpol’s Antics, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists’ Shake the Sheets, and Neko Case’s The Tigers Have Spoken.
In the car: Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn, Satellite Rides by the Old 97s, Bachelor No. 2 by Aimee Mann. I had a long car trip this week, and I listened to the audiobooks of Jon Stewart’s America: The Book and Nick Hornby’s How to Be Good.
I don’t really play CDs anymore since I ripped all my music. But that last couple of CDs that I listened into in their entirity were:
Interpol - Antics
Incubus - When Incubus Attacks, Vol. 1
A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms
Coldplay - Parachutes
Jay-Z - The Black Album
Moby - Play
Moby - Play: The B-Sides
Radiohead - OK Computer
Nirvana - Insecticide
Nirvana - In Utero
CDs that I’ve been rotating recently in no particular order:
Katatonia - Viva Emptiness
Breaking Benjamin - We Are Not Alone
Nightwish - Once
Lacuna Coil - Comalies
Samael - Reign of Light
While Heaven Wept - Of Empires Forlorn
Godsmack - The Other Side
Mercenary - Everblack
IN my CD player? Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark, the best of OMD.
ON my CD player, and getting heavy rotation because I like these I’m not digging a whole lot for fresh material:
Postal Service, Give Up
Carl Orff, Carmina Burana
Pink Floyd, Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Syd Barrett, Opel
Bad Religion, the Process of Belief
Beatles, Revolver
Promise Ring, 30º Everywhere
Promise Ring, Wood/Water
Deathray, Deathray
Mission UK, Masque
Joy Division, Substance
Violent Femmes, Add It Up (best of)
Pink Floyd, DSOTM
Fountains of Wayne, Welcome Interstate Managers.
