Any of you fella’s use the electic razor? I need a recomendation. I have an old, cheap Braun. It doesn’t do much for my facial hair. It does a much better job on my head, oddly enough.
Do those 3 circular blade shavers work any better?
Panasonic Smooth Operator wet/dry. Worked great for me till I droped it. Wish it had a better non-slip grip. I have a full beard, don’t ask where I used the shaver.
I kept seeing the commercials for the Norelco Advantage, and the money back guarantee that comes with it. So I took the Norelco Challenge, and bought the damn thing ($149 I think). Anyway, I love it, much easier than the Mach3 razor I was using, and very close shave. The only complaint I have is that I haven’t quite figured out the correct angle for the under jawbone areas, but I get better at it every time. The best thing is that you can shave without wetting your face. You also have to give it the full 21 days usage they recommend, it really does work better over time.
You can’t go wrong, if you don’t like it, they’ll refund your money, just keep the receipt.
I use the Norelco Reflex-Action. I’ve had it for about 4 years. It does a really nice job, and it’s fast and comfortable. You do have to let your beard get used to the shave, but it doesn’t take that long. The whiskers will start growing out instead of down…however, if you’re already using an electric, you may get close shaves immediately. Mine doesn’t have the goo spout (oh darn!) but it works just fine. Just replaced my blades too…got a much nicer shave since then.
I recently bought the Reflex-Action model and, so far, I’ve been surprised and delighted. Apparently, it takes about 21 days for your hair to change direction (as mentioned above) since the packaging included a note to that affect.
I had a Braun years ago. It really turned me off to electric razors as it was loud and irritated my skin.
makes note to check into buying some Norelco stock
I much prefer blades to electrics as well, but if you MUST go electric, I’d go with a rotary over a foil shaver. Long ago, I used a Remington foil shaver, and it was pure hell. My Norelcos (perodically some misguided individual gives me one) didn’t give me as much of a “hair being yanked out by the roots” feeling.
Since I’m going with a beard these days, I’m using a Norelco trimmer and a Mach 3 to clean up my neck and cheeks.
I agree that “electric” and “shaver” are oxymorons. I’ve used both foil and rotary shavers in my time, and both tend to pull the hair while shaving the skin raw.
I use an old-fashioned razor that I drop double-edged blades into. Nothing else does a really good job - pivoting-head multi-bladed razors just make me bleed a lot. BTW - anyone know a good place to look for Gilette Super Stainless double-edged blades? Those things get harder to find every time i try to buy them…
I’ve seen at Sav-on’s here in Southern California.
So far we’ve got 3 votes for Norelco(2 for the Reflex-action and 1 for the Advantage), 1 vote for the Panasonic Wet/Dry, 3 for old-fashioned blades, and 2 testimonials to the suckiness of the Braun.
Another vote for the Norelco reflex action. I bought mine a few years ago when my old Braun started dying (actually, the batteries where dying after only about 2 days of use, and I was somewhat unsatisfied with the job it was doing at any rate). I actually bought it and (what was) the current Braun at the same time (since both offered a money-back guarantee if not satisfied) to do my own comparison test. I found that the Braun was slightly better on my face, but the Norelco was much better on my neck, and couldn’t justify buying both :). Of course, YMMV.
Someone gave me an Eltron (it’s pretty much a Braun under another name) and I used it for years. Found it very comfortable, but eventually I picked up a Norelco and moved the Eltron to my travel kit.
A few weeks ago I got curious and started shaving one side of my face with the Norleco and the other side with the Eltron, and asking Mrs. Kunilou to look at and feel the difference. It didn’t matter which side I shaved or how many consecutive days I shaved the same side, she always thought the Norelco side was the better shaven.
kunilou, what was the method of testing? Did the findings remain the same throughout the spectrum of skin sensitivity? (ie. hand, cheek, neck, etc.) I may have to try this on MY wife.
“But, Honey, it’s for a research study I’m doing!”
I’ve tried NORELCO, Remington, Braun and others-they are all much inferior to a blade. The best electric razor I’ve found is also the cheapest-a brand called Wahle-they cost around $25.00, and do a great job! The only drwback-they are very noisey!
My old reliable Phillishave (sp?) finally died after about 6 years, so I got a top-o-the-line Braun. Used it about a week, took it back to Wal-Mart because I thought it was a piece of shit. Got a mid-line Remington, and its not even cordless. I love it.
