I once ordered something late at night and it was delivered early the next morning. I remember being astonished, and calculating the distance between the business and my house, and realizing that if they had immediately driven the item directly to my house, it would’ve still been en route. They must’ve had a distribution center nearby.
My office once placed an online order for some supplies (I think it was a bunch of styrofoam cups and such), and had it arrive the same day. It couldn’t have been more than 8 hours from order to delivery. I’m still not sure how that happened, and unfortunately I don’t remember who they ordered it from.
This. I ordered some shoes around 2 a.m. And they showed up that afternoon.
I recently placed an online order for a dishwasher part from an appliance parts supplier in the late afternoon (their time), and received it before noon the next day. Given that the shipping was free and the company out-of-state (though in an adjacent one), I’d expected it to take a few days at least.
Ordered online Saturday, received Monday, no rush service requested nor paid for. Not sure the company, but it was one of the office supply houses like Staples or Office Max. Even more impressive that I live in a “fringe” rural area where inner-city delivery isn’t possible and the local store is 60 miles away at least.
If you think about buying a Kindle it’ll just show up in your mailbox the next morning.
Seriously though, for some reason Amazon overnights Kindles. The must make enough money on books that they really want you to get in that extra day of reading.
Would have been even more magical (and a little creepy) if you had received it the same day after work.

I seem to recall that a long time ago, I dropped a letter in the mailbox in the morning, and received the reply that afternoon. This was for something like my car registration renewal, and it was all local deliveries.
nuts.com is crazy fast. All of my orders have come within 24 hours, without paying any extra shipping charges. Once I ordered late at night and when I signed in during lunch that day to see when it would be delivered - it already had been. I was sure it was wrong, but nope, package was waiting for me when I got home.
Like somebody said, it actually spooked me a bit.
I routinely make online purchases from a local company who used to ship the same day, and it would arrive via FedEx bright and early the next day. They’re not nearly as quick as they used to be, though – more like 3-5 days now.
Amazon shipments used to arrive in just 1-2 days, even using their free shipping option. But they’re also no longer as fast anymore.
I’ve ordered a number of time from Williams Brewing (home brewing and winemaking supply) and had items delivered next-day, using ‘regular’ shipping. I’m sure it helps that they’re only 90 miles away, but it’s still nice.
I ordered a few HDMI cables from monoprice.com on a Saturday afternoon, and received them on Monday. I was a bit freaked out, because they went by regular mail. The postmark was from California, and I lived in New Jersey.
I needed to reinstall Windows XP after a hard drive disaster and had lost the OEM disks. I called Dell at 9pm one evening to explain my problem and ask if there was anything they could do. They said they would send a replacement. A package with the installation CDs was in my mailbox when I checked at 10am the following morning. So, 13 hours.
The computer was still under warranty and I paid nothing for this.
I might win this one. I ordered 6 sanding belts and 6 bandsaw blades from McMaster and Carr. I had them in 2 1/2 hours. This was just last week. I had no idea they were local and had local delivery trucks.
Amazon has warehouses in many states so its no wonder things come fast from them.
I have gotten same day delivery from Amazon UK.
I’ve gotten things lately within 3 days from Amazon, IINM. The reason why? We have a warehouse in Spartanburg now.
Ordered a movie from Amazon, no special delivery or anything, got it in three days, and that was over a weekend. I was surprised and pleased.
Back in the good old days (1999 or so), outpost.com (now Fry’s, but the deal is long gone) had a standing deal that all of their stuff was delivered next business day for free…and the day didn’t start until 3:00 am. I bought a lot of stuff after midnight and had it by 10:00 the same day.
Now, the bad news of Amazon having a warehouse in your state is you now must pay sales tax on Amazon purchases while for many other online retailers you do not.
