What's the most interesting car you saw today?

Yeah that’s not a factory option. And yeah, red in the front is stupid. And you can’t fix stupid.

On the way to work this morning I saw a 1980s Mustang coming towards me. I normally don’t consider Mustangs from that era all that interesting, but then I noticed this one had a slightly different “face” and a hood scoop. This wasn’t an ordinary Mustang, this was a rare Mustang SVO!

Fewer than 10,000 were built from 1984-86. The Mustang SVO used a turbo 4 cylinder, and despite its small displacement was the best performing Mustang you could get at the time, as it had similar horsepower to the naturally aspirated V8, and lighter weight. That also made it the best handling Mustang. But it was also by far the most expensive Mustang, so most people opted for the V8.

Heh. My Wifes grocery car looking Subaru Accent has a turbo charged 4 cylinder boxer engine. It’s AWD. Not exactly a lightweight car.

It runs like a scared rabbit (though doesn’t handle quite as well). But the thing astounds me.

The Mustang SVO was a very cool car. A friend had one and that was probably the only one I ever saw. Very cool, the SVO!

After owning a Jeep for 10 years I recently bought my first Subaru. It’s an Outback Wilderness Edition (or, OBW), and it has the 2.4L turbo 4 boxer. That engine moves it pretty well! And it is quite capable as an off-roader and winter snow car too. I’m impressed by what it can do.

Just remembered the Rivian pickup I saw in traffic on Friday while I was waiting to cross a street.

Lipstick. Pig.

Fox bodied Mustangs were good cars. The SVOs had good power on paper but had a lot of turbo lag. Their lighter weight helped handling, but even the V8 cars handled well.

A friend modded an SVO for racing, got it up to over 500 HP, but it could barely make 2 laps before something blew up.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse is a new performance-oriented edition for the 7th-generation Mustang which came out for 2024. It is a track oriented, street-legal, enhanced performance Mustang. This owner was at the car wash and graciously let me take these pictures (some owners don’t like that, and that has led to some interesting encounters; but that’s another story for another day).

The Mustang Dark Horse is a track car, but this particular owner does not do any track days with his baby. The Mustang Dark Horse comes with either a 6-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. Good for Ford for offering the 6-speed manual!! (These days it’s difficult getting a new Porsche 911 with a manual transmission. A sad state of affairs.)

Special for the Dark Horse: a unique logo, and the DARK HORSE label on the front hood.

It has Ford’s Coyote V8 engine, a 32-valve DOHC crate engine with direct and port fuel injection, twin independent variable camshaft timing, and high-flow cylinder heads that produces 500 horsepower and 418 lb-ft of torque.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse can be yours starting at about $70,000.

I think this is a Holden Commodore SS, probably the final generation. I didn’t realize what it was when I saw it in the parking lot at work, so I never checked whether it was right or left hand drive.

I don’t have enough knowledge to definitely identify it, but the last gen Commodore was sold in the US a a Chevrolet SS (I think). Maybe rebadged, as were many of the Pontiac GTO to look like a Monaro.

Yeah, at least from what I have read on the internet, it’s not uncommon for people to replace the Chevy badges on a US market Chevy SS with Holden badges.

That must be it, thanks!

Accompanied my better half to a hospital complex today. Didn’t get a chance to ride in it but they have an electric shuttle bus for getting around all the different buildings, these apparently are becoming more common in various places. Until today, I had only seen similar things in Watch Dogs: Legion.

Later on, I noticed my first Ford Flex.

Looks to be left hand. You can barely see the wheel through the glare on the window.

67(?) Malibu
Didn’t mean to frame the picture like that, but I think it works.

I just got back from a grocery run; among the interesting vehicles spotted: a ~45 year old Camaro (Z28?) showing its age*, a bright red Hummer H3, and some little electric unicycle thing.

On a walk tonight I saw a 2003 Mercury Marauder, looked like a daily driver. No picture, but it looked like this, only beat to hell.

Aston Martin DB11 convertible in the office parking lot guest spaces.

I had an ‘86 Mustang GT convertible (the heaviest version). A friend had the ‘86 SVO. I could beat him off the line, but he would trounce me after 1/4 mile.
