A few weeks ago, I had dinner at a Greek restaurant with dancing waiters. Above the restaurant’s front door was a photograph of actress Melina Mercouri. Inspired by that photo, this week-end, at my local Virgin Megastore, I was searching (unsuccessfully of course) for a DVD of “Never on Sunday” by Jules Dassin. Then I started wondering, whatever happened to good old Jules? IMDB doesn’t list a date of death, so I imagine he is still alive.
Jules Dassin is the director of The Naked City, Du rififi chez les hommes (aka Rififi), Never on Sunday, Topkapi and other movies. He was at one timed married to Melina Mercouri, star of Never on Sunday. (Melina Mercouri went on to become minister of culture in Greece.)
Jules Dassin information at IMDB
Does anyone here happen to know what happened to him? Or will I have to wait until the Los Angeles Times prints his obituary (or until Eve writes his biography) to find out his life story after he retired? He would be 88 years old now.
The son of a bitch has been parked on my sofa for the last four months, watching porn videos and making snide comments about my piano-playing. And I cannot KEEP Cheetos in the house any more.

Found the following altavista listing here inviting users to ask questions, but I can’t connect unless I go through altavista.
Good luck. I’m off to Barnes & Noble tonight, while I’m there I’ll see if the entertainment section has a current bio.

Ukulele Ike, tell him to get off his butt and call his publicist! I think a Jules Dassin revival is in order. At least the nice folks from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences could throw him a bone in the form of an Irving Thalberg award, or at least a small retrospective and a round of applause.
lablonde, I was unable to go to the link you provided. When I click on it, I get the dreaded message The host specified in your URL could not be found.
I shall continue the search the old fashioned way ! More Later.

Sorry, no luck. The most I could find is that M. Dassin is chairman of the Melina Mercouri Foundation (Greece, cultural), and that he used the alias Perlo Vita.
Thank you for all your work lablonde! Maybe I’ll try sending in an e-mail to the LA Times, but I doubt they will answer me.
