What's Your Alcohol Preference: Beer or Liquor?

Fruity cocktails are labeled as a “girly drinks” in society, yet the classic “Old Fashioned” or anything “on the rocks” is never reacted upon because it’s a common choice among bars. Even though it may be a thing of beauty, you’ll never hear someone say: “Old Fashion sucks”.

I personally prefer a Long Island Iced Tea, an Alabama Slammer, or any fruity cocktail, but I like whiskey & lemon lime soda as well. However, my main go to is Gatorade/Powerade or any fruit juice mixed with Vodka. I also don’t care for gender labels when it comes to alcohol. I don’t even like beer myself, yet some IPA’s are good.

On an extra note, I’ve been told that I’ll never develop a taste for beer or that I have to keep trying different brands of beer until I find the right one. Furthermore, I really enjoy orange, so maybe Blue Moon with an orange slice is a possibility for me? Also, the Natty Strawberry Lemonade was tolerable, but it still had that cheap beer taste to it.

Welcome to the Straight Dope.

What style of Beer did your friend make? Lager, Ale, Pilsner, Porter, Stout, etc.?

Myself, I prefer Beer over Wine and Liquor. As to the beer, I tend to prefer darker ales, porters & mild stouts. Or Dark Lagers.

Since this was posted I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s another thing good about cider: it goes with everything. Hardcore wine session? Cider’s good too. Steady day with cocktails? Cider can alternate with that. Beer at a pub? I’ll take a cider, thanks. Whereas wine wouldn’t seem quite right for a day at the pool, and liquor wouldn’t seem right for a casual night at the bar which was not meant to end in the gutter.

We have some experts on this board. If you start a thread on it, they give you lots of tips.

Porter is pretty much my favorite type of ale.

I’ve never yet tasted a beer that I thought was fit for human consumption. My favourites (in no particular order) are cider, white wine, rum, and Islay single-malts.

Beer. Lager. Don’t care for ales, stouts, Guinness, any of that. Absolutely would pass on IPAs. I’ve been drinking Yuengling lately. Just the regular, full flavor lager.

It depends on my mood, the place, and the circumstances. With dinner, it’s definitely a drink or two and then, probably, wine with dinner. If it’s happy hour on a Friday at a good micro brewery, then it’s beer.

Red vino. Then vodka, gin, aperol, and campari. Then white vino. Then other spirits.

Have never tasted a beer that I thought was remotely consumable and dark spirits are just a no-no for me.

Not sure if this thread was bumped by a now deleted spammer, but since it’s going again…

These days red wine is the most consumed alcohol in our house. We still have beer fairly frequently, but more in the summertime, less now. I’ll often have beer while manning the grill.

I make G&T for me and Moscow Mules for my wife, and very rarely I’ll make a dirty martini. I’m beginning to drink rum and Coke occasionally.

For sipping alcohol, I have a few bottles of single malt Scotch and small batch bourbon.

Wine.

I hate beer.

I’m not fond of most liquors or mixed drinks.

Cider and Mead are acceptable, though.

I am strictly a liquor drinker, my preferences are good single malts, ryes, and bourbons. I also enjoy whiskey made from not traditional grains such as triticale and oats. I have never been a wine drinker and never much of a beer drinker. I won’t waste money on cheap stuff and have no issues spending north of $100 if something sounds good. I also invested a chunk of change to have whiskey made with my blends of grains. I’m still close to 3 years away from trying some.

I am a lightweight when it comes to alcohol, so if I drink hard liquor I can only have a few sips. With beer, I can have a nice tall glassful. Also, beer tastes really good. Wine is nice too, but I prefer beers and ales.

I apologize for re-reading/responding to my old threads, but I live near the Pittsburgh area and I sometimes go out around the downtown/Southside area with my cousin and her friends.

Even though I don’t know anything about this “Mike” guy, I’m sure he was well known for his “drunken behavior” so often that he’s only allowed to order beer at certain bars in the Pittsburgh area.

As for my taste for alcohol (as of today) I still haven’t found a beer that I enjoy, even though I tried a few here and there, but they were just “alright” to me. (Stella and Belgian White/Blue Moon Orange)

However, I’m starting to enjoy Seltzers more, specifically Truly’s, mainly because most alcoholic seltzer brands are low in calories/sugar. They also taste pretty good to me.

Furthermore, I still enjoy mixed drinks, but since I only drink whenever I go out (which isn’t very often, since I’m currently working more often & saving money after graduating college) I consider myself a “mature drinker” (when I first started drinking in college) which consists of me “nursing and enjoying” my drinks rather than chugging or drinking them quickly.

Far Niente Sauvignon Blanc

Wine, wine, wine (elderberry)
Wine, wine, wine (or cherry)
Wine, wine, wine (blackberry)
Wine, wine, wine (half and half)
Wine, wine, wine, oh boy
Pass that bottle to me

Wow, I’m surprised at so many people here who “Don’t drink cocktails” or “Can’t stand beer” or “Can’t stand the smell or taste of beer, coolers, or any sort of wine.”

So, I’m feeling pretty cosmopolitan… I like everything (except gin… why would you want to drink something flowery?).

I certainly have preferences: a smooth single-malt Scotch, or almost any Bourbon, a Spotted Cow or any wheaty/malty beer, any Hard Cider, and oh, yeah, a well-crafted Old Fashioned … yummmm…

And as for the people who posted variations on “Doesn’t matter, I get so shit-faced that I can’t taste what I’m drinking…”, here’s wisdom from someone younger but wiser:

Amen!

I’m with digs, there’s pretty much no kind of booze that I can’t appreciate a GOOD example of. Gin was probably the last one I came around on, likely due to a traumatic experience in high school. But now, a stiff G & T on a hot day or a Bombay martini (blue cheese olive)…mmm…

Currently I’m about 50% wine, 40% beer, 10% liquor. This is a relatively recent change, for most of my adult and near-adult life it was much beer-some liquor-little wine. I’ve also recently cut back on my drinking a bit, and have somewhat to my surprise noticed that almost all of that has been at the expense of the liquor segment; I guess now that I’m having fewer drinks I want to stick to things I can drink slowly.

My Elite Eight:

Oregon Pinot Noir
German Riesling
Spanish Reds
Guinness
Pilsner Urquell
Daisy Cutter (local Chicago IPA, otherwise substitute Sierra Nevada)
Whisk(e)y
Absinthe

I endorse your overall sentiment but I don’t think of gin as flowery. Evergreeny, perhaps. Think “Pine-Sol”.

I’m a beer girl myself. Dark beers prefered. There’s a local brewery that brews a great variety, and paired with a nice steak I can be happy.
