#2 sides and back, fade in legnth from back to front so that the only real hair I have is the part I can see in front. Basically super modified 80’s skater cut.
#1 on top, no guard on the sides, no sideburns. I love it.
One of these days, I’ll see if I can go one shorter. But even at that it still means sunburn if I’m not careful. Oh, and in winter it’s REALLY cold.
#2 or 1.5 on the sides and back (I change from time to time–not in the same haircut), blend it in on the top.
Actually, I usually say something like, “So, Vinny, who do you like in the Eagles game?” He already knows how I want my hair cut.
I usually go “give me something professional looking, I suppose. Blend it in the back, and no sideburns please”
I don’t rely on words; I bring a picture. This one, in fact.
If forced, I’d probably describe it as “long layers, textured on top. Bevel the ends so they flip on their own; I’m too lazy to use rollers or a curling iron.”
I cut my own and my husband’s hair. For both of us it’s #8 (1 inch length) on the back and sides.
He has unruly curly hair so I leave the top a bit longer so he can part it on the side. He does his own sideburns, shaving with a razor right at the line where his glasses go.
For me I cut the top so it stands up straight, then hack at it with thinning scissors and/or regular scissors held vertically until it is chunky and spiky and no longer a solid mass.
I haven’t had mine cut in about 6 months now, so I’m no longer sure. I think I’m going to let it grow long enough so that I can cut it off and send it to Locks of Love.
“Cut it short, right under my ears, straight bangs. See you in six months.”
Like it is, but clean it up. Don’t touch the bangs, and try to get it off the ears. Scissors only.
You guys with the #'s and the clippers…man, you don’t realize how bad it looks. :smack:
Inverted bob, to the chin in the front, not short enough to use clippers in the back, about 45 degrees on the sides, and trim up the bangs.
It’s the Victoria Beckham / Katie Holmes haircut, but not nearly as severe of an angle from front-to-back.
Jesus, everyone here shaves his head!
I don’t have many pictures of myself that I can get to on my computer, but here’s one (I’m on the far left) from this past summer. My hair is in pretty much the same style now, but it’s significantly longer (still not past my collar or anything, though). I really need to put more pictures of me on my computer.
I just tell the barber to trim it down, shave my sideburns up to a certain level, trim the back so it doesn’t look like I have a mullet (:p), etc. Always scissors only except for the sideburns. I really have no idea how I would describe it; maybe someone with haircutting experience could help me out?
Bonus Question: How often do you change your hairstyle? I’ve had some length-variation of my current hairstyle pretty much all my life; I’ve never shaved it or grown it out really long.

ETA: It’s amazing how different I look in six month’s time, by the way.
I’ve been going to the same stylist for a decade. All I know now is that the conversation goes like this:
“Same as last time?”
“Yep.”
If I had to describe it to a new stylist, it’d probably be, “short on the sides, a little longer on top, so when I put some product in it, it’ll spike up.”
Umm, no it actually looks really good on me. Thanks for the unasked for opinion though.
I have mine cut to the bone all over; just as short as the guy can get it without actually shaving it. I let it grow out to about an inch all over and then go get it cut to the bone again.
I haven’t any idea what the number/clipper things mean.
Doesn’t that make it difficult for you to see?
To answer the OP: #4 clipper cut, blended in at the sides.
Collarbone length, a little bit of layering in back, tapered from chin-length in the front… no, taper more of the hair… no, not a longer taper, a deeper taper… involve more of my hair in it… like half… yes really!
My hairs too pretty to shave my head. My hair just guy knows my haircut. It’s kind of a shaggy Patrick Dempsey sort of look.
#2 everywhere. I used to be #3 or at time #4 because I didn’t think my hair looked good short. Now I realize it looks much better short. I have them leave the sideburns…right now it’s because I have a beard, and a beard with no sideburns would look pretty weird (well…unless it was jsut a goatee.) But even in the summer when I’m clean-shaven I keep the burns. I’ve had them since I was 15 and was first able to grow them, and I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of them. I keep them longer than average, too…just below the bottom of the earlobe instead of the “mid point”, which I’d say is average.
When I blow dry my hair, it looks a lot like the picture on the right, though my layers are a bit shorter around the front and I look nothing like the girl in that picture.
If I let it dry naturally without using a diffuser, it’s more wavy, like the picture on the right
When I take the time to blow it out with a diffuser, and scrunch up my curls, it looks a lot like the picture on the left, except that that girl has bangs, so mine isn’t that short in the front.
