I think they’re too small.
I was fine without them. I’m fine with them. I agree with this:
nm. I really like the EDIT feature.
Fine with them, but turned’em off. I’d rather judge posts by their content, and often tune out the usernames entirely.
I’m undecided, but thought I’d try to go with the flow and see if I get used to it. If not, I can always switch them off again.
The best thing I can say about avatars on message boards is that they are pointless – anything else I would say about them is negative.
There are plenty of places people can go to look at pictures – I come here to read.
I don’t think trying to make this place like every other place is good idea, nor is trying to please everyone.
Given the long time vocal contingent that hates avatars, can’t see this move as “trying to please everyone”. It’s a tiny way to customize your online persona that is simply expected by the vast majority of internet dwellers. Google groups have avatars for Pete’s sake.
Well, I was going to add one but every picture I try to use (just my own photos taken with my phone) it says they’re too big and I don’t know how to resize them.
I love them! Now if we could just get images added, too!
It’s not a problem for me, as I’m too stupid to figure out how to turn them on. I do hope we don’t spend too much time, outside of threads like this, talking about them.
It is fairly easy on a PC/Laptop.
Good old Paint can actually do it pretty easy. (as can dozens of other image tools)
Open the picture in Paint: Choose the resize button from the image section of the ribbon. Set the Resize by to Pixels from Percentage and enter 50 for the Horizontal and maintain aspect ratio. Click OK and save then upload to Straightdope.
They can be conservative and open up 1 forum to images. Though that will lead to trolling by placing up NSFW pics that people will end up viewing at work and causing issues. It is doable will probably require more mod work and a bit more server load, though only a little bit if the pics are all hosted off server. Though the option to turn off images is also built into vBulletin.
I’ve seen on other vBulletin boards the ability change the functioning of New Posts button to exclude forums. That would be a good addition if images were turned on select forum(s). And again the option to turn off images is built into vBulletin.
I wasn’t going to bother, then I thought of this one so I made it happen.
If I get sick of seeing them, they’re easy to disable.
Well, it’s a new toy. I imagine the shine will wear off. People went poll crazy for a while when that was added.
If you want to see what they look like go to your Control Panel’s edit options page, scroll down to “thread display options” and tick the “show avatars” box.
I am a bit concerned that people won’t be able to make out the name tag on my brain in a jar.
I already had my browser zoom set at 150% for readability, so they seem just about right to me. There are a few that seem poorly chosen, too much detail to determine what they are at this size (even at 150%) but mostly I think they’re fine.
Is it Abby Normal?
Can’t make it out, but I assume it says “Abby”.
Thanks!
Well it doesn’t say Abby Normal so I am disappointed.
