I don’t mind them so far but there’s so few of them right now. My opinion might change if this catches on in a big way and I might turn them off. I do like the clean look without the clutter of a bunch of graphics.
Of course, I might get one myself. If I can find just the right image.
My main reason for liking avatars is to quickly find my last post. If I can scroll quickly until I see my own avatar, then I know I have found the point where the thread was when I last visited it. Assuming I posted in it, of course.
I did something like that accidentally–apparently I am the only person ever to turn off the “notify when on line” button, so I can scroll to the little red “light” amongst all of the blue and green ones.
I just noticed an unexpected benefit— when zombie threads get revived, it’s easy to see which posters from way back when are still active, if they have an avatar.
I somehow managed to get by for 17 years or so without a logo attached to every post, but maybe I’ve been doing it wrong all this time. So, avatar it is.
But yeah, at 50 x 50 pixels, some of y’all need to think up something more graphically distinctive.
I don’t like them, and I turned them off as quickly as I could. However, I remember a while back when someone was demanding a “logical” reason for not having them. I commented that the decision to not have them had nothing to do with logic, nor was it subject to his approval. Turning them on isn’t subject to my approval, either. And that’s all I have to say about that.
Good point. I find myself already doing the same as well. The “relevance” thing seems silly to me. It’s not meant to be a literal image of your username or anything (though it can be), just a little image you feel represents you in some way.
Just a quick note, if you use AdBlock (or similar), you can always block any individual avatar image you find bothersome for whatever reason without turning off avatars as a whole.
